What’s the obsession over egg shell color?

Here in New England, supermarket eggs as well as farm eggs always were brown because of the predominance of Rhode Island and NH reds and barred (Plymouth) rock chickens here in the former British colonies. It has only been in recent years that some white eggs have hit the shelves here.

    >brown shelled eggs are kinda "newer" in the mainstream Not here in New England. Most store bought eggs here have always been brown, coming from Rhode Island or NH reds and barred rock hens, the original chickens of the colonies.

    Considering Getting Chickens..Some questions..

----Battery hen's beaks do NOT grow back.---- Ah, that is sad, but not unexpected. I hadn't thought of auctions. ----I really recommend that you go knowing you won't be able to save them all though. ...so I hope my thoughts don't give offense.--- No, not at all. I asked for...

    Considering Getting Chickens..Some questions..

    Considering Getting Chickens..Some questions..

We are thinking about maybe converting our small horse barn to a chicken house after our old pony is gone. Here are some of the questions running through my mind: We think of our pets (and the few hens we would get would be pets) as family members and I want to avoid any of our pets outliving...

Possible newbie in Vermont (northeastern US)

Hi again, thanks for all of the warm welcomes from all over the country! Everyone I've heard from here and elsewhere give ringing endorsements of keeping chickens. I really do miss having chickens around. Long ago so many people kept chickens, and now it has been decades since I've even seen...

Possible newbie in Vermont (northeastern US)

Hi everyone, Hubby and I are thinking about getting a few older hens to inhabit our barn when our old pony leaves us. Right now we are on the fence about this, and have a lot of questions. We are in our early 60s and bought our 2 1/2 acre property back in the early 1970s. We thought about...
