Thank you, Beth! I think I will try the cotton now and see how they react. 4 of the chickens have laid eggs today but I have some afternoon layers. I'll let them try it out.
I collected some leftover cotton from the field next to us and am wondering if that would be ok to place in the bedding of the nests. The main reason I'm concerned is because of all of the seeds in the cotton. Would the chickens try to eat them? I tried to clean them out but it was a royal...
Thank you to everyone with your suggestions. I uncovered the hole and hopefully the snake will escape. I'll see if he is there tomorrow or not. I went from getting 6 eggs a day to 3 eggs. I just didn't want him to be tooooo greedy!
I did have one living under the coop and knew it was good to keep him around but he eventually left. My fear is since this one is laying in the nests, would he bother or hurt my chickens? Snakes are good but not if they will hurt my babies.
Ok, yesterday I caught him grinning with an egg in his mouth. I thought I had the upper hand since his mouth was full and he was defenseless. Well, he spit the egg out and took off. This morning, all of my chickens were sleeping outside and I'm sure it's because of this snake. Today, only 3...
I'm waiting too! I have a hen sitting in a box and I sit and stare at her - like that's going to make her lay an egg!! My co-workers are asking about my hens. I think I'll have to take a day off of work when I see the first egg - too much excitement!
I never knew chickens could be so fun!
I should say that my chickens are free range during the day and I put them up at night. If I stake anything outside, they will be there. They also spend the hot days under the coop. My coop is very large.
Can anyone tell me a safe way to rid the chicken coop of ants? They are going for the water. My coop is raised, on cinder blocks and all of the floors are wood but these guys are crawling through the cracks. I'm going to completely scrub the coop tomorrow morning (while it's cooler) but...
