So they are both likely pulleys then!? Thank you so much for the references! It'll be devastating if she is a he because we cannot keep a roo. The kiddos are so attached to them due to all the trauma we've been through with our flock. Getting rid of a healthy happy chick would be AWEFUL!
Hi, I just posted this is the gender thread but thought I'd look here too. I'm new to Orpingtons, they are absolutely beautfil!
Here are my two, one Lavendar and one jubilee. They are both 20 ish wks old. Jubilee is about 1 wk older than Wingsparrow (the Lavendar). I'm worried she is a he...
Both of these chicks are about 20 wks old, Jubilee is a wk older than the lavender. Am I wrong in thinking the Lavendar (aka Wingsparrow) is a roo? My kiddos are attached to him/her but if its a roo we can't keep her/him.
Thx very much for responding! Ok, I'm relieved to know they are still young. It's been a while since we had our chicks in NY so I didn't remember. Although, their wing feathers are all there. So maybe 1-2 wks old? Also, we live in Fl and don't have a heat source. They seem quite content and...
Update: we put them in a larger bin, twice the size of before and there is still pecking. They also have just discovered how to hop on the feeder to hop out of the bin!! The bin in prolly 2 ft tall, I thought we were at least a wk away from that stage!
Thx again!
Hi,
We received our new baby chicks on Saturday. I think they are within a wk old but have no idea how to tell. They are starting to develop feathers on their wings so maybe they are older?
The problem I noticed this morning was one of them started pecking and being very...
in my other post I described my flock, 6 Reds and 4 others, one being a rooster. They have been free range since they were about 10 wks old (they are about 24-ish now) but due to neighbors and poo all over the driveway and garage we decided they needed a paddock/enclosure. We started this 2...
i have a set of 6 Reds that have been laying for about 6 wks or so. I also have a set of 4 chickens that are 10 wks younger than them, one is a rooster. They have been together since the little ones were about 6 wks or so, and in the coop together for at least a month, likely longer (I lose...
Ok, so I did the float test on all the eggs. None of them floated!!! All of them sank and less than a dozen had a slight lift of the narrow end so they laid slightly tilted on the bottom. Does that makes sense?
I used those eggs to feed to the hens, and you are so right, they LOVED them...
Oh, I do have a rooster, but he is 10 wks younger than the layers. And, they actually don't like him. At. All. They pick on him quite badly, as with the others in his family (I have a group of 6 hens and then introduced 4 new birds are 10 wks younger than them. They peck them a lot!)
How old...
It has been in the 80's here, going into the 60's at night. I just looked up the floater test. Is it really accurate?
Would it really be any different than keeping them on my counter for 2 wks?
If I cook them up and give them to the hens, how would I do that? The shells too, or just the...
We got our very first eggs about a month ago, we were so very thrilled! That same week we found a few eggs around their favorite spots in our bushes. Since then we have only been getting 1-3 eggs in our nesting boxes each day, along with a few soft eggs here and there, in the coop.
Well...
I don't think they ate much of the egg, the white was gone, but the yolk was in a clump. The shell was broken and in a few different places in the coop. So, maybe they DID eat the egg?
We have plenty of squirrels around, do they eat the eggs, I didn't think they would?
We are out in the...
