Good morning everyone, I had a visit with my insurance company yesterday evening, reviewing my whole portfolio with them, and out of curiosity I brought up my interest in raising chickens next spring. She informed me that if I own even just 3 chickens I then have to be insured under a "hobby...
Very good tips mum. I'll keep them all in mind next spring. I've been locating websites and emal addresses of local breeders. Though some seen to be mainly breeding for show. I've really been reading up on black australorps lately. I've been noticing alot of reviews of the breeds I really liked...
Good morning all. Its a chilly frosty but very beautiful morning here in Nova Scotia. Thanks for all the tid bits of information. I'm glad that chickens adapt better to cool temperatures, now I wont feel so bad next year when I have to set them out in their coop just as flurries begin to fall...
So can anyone else share some local options that I can look into. Im in the Elmsdale area. Not that it matters a whole lot. Just needing more opinions I suppose. I see alot of chickens and chicks go up on kijiji this time of year too. Is that a viable option for a beginner.
I'll certainly check out the link twocrows. Thanks. As I mentioned earlier, I am hoping I can begin this whole adventure next spring. But was just thinking over, if I do get chicks in April, would they only be getting big and strong enough for the outdoor coop just as the cold winter months draw...
The only place I have actually checked in on was a local Co-op feeds and needs, i believe its called. They informed me that they receive chicks beginning april and all through the summer. The lady I was talking to told me they come from New Brunswick. I asked her what breed chicks they get in...
I have the same mind frame, once I get used to egg layers, I feel id like to dabble in meat birds as well...seems the next logical step. Where abouts in NS do you plan on getting your chicks. are you hoping for specific breed or just getting some random chicks at the local feed store. Im not...
Thanks for the welcomes, I am quite excited. The girlfriend seems a little weary lol. But i'm sure she'll fall in love when she sees them for the first time ha. I currently have a buddy of mine helping me with the engineering of a fairly large coop and run that i'm hoping can be done before...
I'm originally from Newfoundland, but have been in NS nearly 9 years now. Very cool that there is local sections on this forum. May be helpful in learning where to get chickens, and everyone else's experiences.
Good morning everyone, I'm brand new on the scene. I don't even have chickens or a coop yet, but have gotten myself all wound up to get started next spring. So in the meantime I've found myself gathering lots of info, bookmarking lots of websites, and thus, joining this forum. I suspect there...
