So I would agree that that would not be enough space if they had to live in there, but they just sleep there, with warm weather i leave the doors open at each end for the breeze to blow through. They have an acre at their disposal all day long. I have 2 coops one for my banty's and one for...
Can a coop have to much roosting space? I have one Roo and 25 hens. My coop is 10x11 and had 3 long roosts all at the same level. Since some of my cochins were having trouble getting up on the roost, I lowered them to about 3 ft off the ground. Ok that is the background. In the last month a...
Nov 2013 my rooster started loosing feathers on his neck. It is now march 2014 and his neck is almost bear and his feathers are not coming back. His skin is pretty red, i have put antibiotic ointment on it and vasoline to keep it from frostbite. This is not normal is it? It does not look...

Thanks for reading. I did some more reading here on BYC and a lot of people use sand. The one thing i remember was not to use play sand. I think i realized my problem after reading other posts. My sand had moisture already in it and once in the coop, did not completely dry...
I've posted to several other threads with the wet sand problem. I put my sand in after it was dry, but its wet now, im afraid to clean the coop because of the amonia smell and now its to cold to open up for 24 hours to air out and believe me it needs to be cleaned. What is sweet PDZ?
I hope that someone reads this and helps me. I have linoleum over wood subfloor in my coop, i cleaned it out in september and put in 4 inches of cleaned river sand. I was so excited after what i read here, first time i raked it and scooped it there was such a strong amonia odor i bought passed...
I read several postings here regarding using construction sand on the floor. I couldnt find that post again but thought it said it dried out quick? Any who, I bought a load of clean river sand and put it in the coop about 3 inches deep along with DE, i have a raised coop and linoleum flooring...
I thought I had hit the jackpot, I answered an add for a free barnvelder rooster. He is beautiful and we named him Baron Von Barnvelder. He is just over a year old.
I noticed that he was picking on one of my Americana's and I mean he would chase her until he caught her and then stand on...
We built frames 6ft tall 6 wide out of 2x2 treated wood with a center support and stretched chicken wire over it using a staple gun and air compressor, we attached the frames together with screws and some t-posts for strength. Then we ran thin cable across and length and stretched bird...
Thank you HEChicken. This hens stay under the privets next to the pen where there is lots of cool dirt and shade. I go out and talk to my chickens 5 or 6 times a day, my rooster who is a frisky teenager has been on her a couple of times and i have seen her in a nest box, but she leaves...
Okay forgive me if this question has gone around and around, and I have read many of the post but I am still not clear. I have 4 hens. My Americauna has laid every day since I got her in Late July 12. The last egg she laid was during the night from her roost ad she has not laid since (2 weeks...
