Barnvelders... Has anyone heard of this kind of chicken?????

I have 14 barnevelders that I am raising now. So far I really like them and everyone around here that has them loves them. Mine came from Ideal as well.

I think it is just neat that we were able to add these to our flock. I happen to have some week olds that are in the brooder that I added these to.

I love having different kinds of chickens. Of course without the corresponding roo... can't get the offspring!

I only have an Araucana roo and I imagine I will have some Silkie roos from my straight run.

Of the eggs I have hatched, I am not sure the sex much less the breed!

i would love to have some barnevelders. they have such pretty coloring.

i've got to get rid of some of my SLW first though...

Mine were very pretty, but seriously lacked in the egg laying / color department.

Hi,

I may have seen this thread before and for some reason never posted anything.

I just wanted to quickly say that I hope you enjoy your Barnies. You will probably find them to be a bit more exciteable than perhaps your other breeds and I hope you don't get your expectations too high on the dark egg color.

The Barnie egg color is not near as dark as what many folks believe and it is something that we Barnie breeders are working on. Also, coming from hatchery stock you never quite know for sure what quality you will wind up with.

Hopefully you fall in love with them and join those of us who are serious about the preservation, protection, perpetuation, and improvement of the breed.

God Bless,

I have 10 barnvelder hens. I love them.I got them from Murray Mcmurray Hatchery. The only reason i have them is because Murray Mcmurray had some kind of assortment that came with 10 barnvelders,2 turkeys,2 geese, and 2 ducks. I got lucky all 10 Barnvelders ended up being hens.

I thought I had hit the jackpot, I answered an add for a free barnvelder rooster. He is beautiful and we named him Baron Von Barnvelder. He is just over a year old.

I noticed that he was picking on one of my Americana's and I mean he would chase her until he caught her and then stand on top of her and just stomp back and forth, I felt bad for her so I sold her to a friend. Last week he decided to start picking on my spitzhauben which is a very docile bird and kind of keeps to herself. Tonight I went down to the hen house to close it up and this is what I found

Needless to say he will be dinner by the end of the week. He is a beautiful bird and I have kinda got attached to him, he comes and looks at me and follows me around, but I can't have him tearing up my hens. I'm having to much trouble finding them to buy. So thats not to say they are all like that, but I was not impressed with the rooster. If I do not let him out of the run (20x28), he stomps back and forth at the door and picks on everyone until I let him out. I do still want some hens though, if I can ever find any.
