5 years ago we spent about $2000 on a coop 6x24. It was the hardware cloth I think that made it so expensive but we wanted it to be predator proof. Better safe than sorry.
I've only had my Maline for a few months. She looked full grown when I got her but she hadn't started laying yet. She is now but not every day. For such a huge bird I was expecting bigger eggs. She talks a lot (Ok, she squawks) but loud and often. I can't have a rooster where I live but...
This is only 4 days in, just started veterycin and vet Rx. She hangs back away form the flock sometimes and keeps eye shut. Hasn't laid in 4 days. Some have suggested lice or fleas but it looks like crust, not bugs.
I laid only a few patches of sod in my yard this summer and it killed all my birds from the pesticides they load it up with. Don't do it if, fill low areas with sand instead. It was horrible watching them die from seizures.
Yes, it most likely is. All my hens ended up dying within 2 weeks of each other. I ripped out all the sod and use sand. The pesticide companies say they would wait up to a year before letting animals graze on it. It messes them up neurologically. My last one was like a Zombie a few days before...
I know this is an old thread but I wanted to add the dangers of adding sod to yards also. I lost 2 out of 3 of my chickens from them grazing on it and the 4th one doesn't act the same and her crop looks pale. It kills them within a week. They get listless and have a seizure. I am so hurt and...
Please beware of buying chemically treated sod for your yard or hen house. Less than 2 weeks ago we laid some sod in the run after it flooded from a recent storm and we wanted to raise the level. Within a week 2 were dead. They were fine one day and a bit listless the next day. I held them...
I know this is an old post but I'm pretty sure I just lost 2 of my pullets today due to the new sod we put in the run. We had a bad storm 3 weeks ago and it got real muddy in there so we decided to make the ground higher with sod. Within 10 days 2 of the 3 hens I had croaked the same way...

I have almost the complete opposite with the types of birds. My Orpingtons are very aggressive and paralyzed my Easter Egger and my giant black Astralorp. Now I'm down to 2 Buff Orps and 1 Golden laced Wyandotte which they pull the feathers out of. They have not started laying yet but...
I can't agree with the part about "letting them sort it out". I only had 4 to start, they pecked one to the point where I had to put her put of her misery, both legs paralyzed, got one more to replace her, then the biggest one in the batch (an Austalop) was pecked so bad one leg was paralyzed...
Mine are 4 months old and are absolutely crazy for spaghetti. I can get them to do tricks for it already. But that's mainly for my entertainment. To help beat the heat in Florida, I put out slices of frozen watermelon for them. The love it. As for when to de-worm them, I sprinkle...
