Cochin Lovers, are these pure or cochin/orpington mixes (do you think?)

Thank you! Never imagined how much fun they would be!

Cochin Lovers, are these pure or cochin/orpington mixes (do you think?)

Yeah, I do love my cochorps, Polly, Dolly and Milly. At 8 weeks they all appear female and are keepers. They are out with the big girls now, sorting things out. It seems to be going well.

Deep litter method vs sand in the run

I had read somewhere that one standard size hen creates roughly 100 lbs of poop in a year. Scary thought if it's true, isn't it? My run is half roofed and half uncovered, but we plan on roofing the whole thing soon. I will tarp it over if I see rain. The coop is under a tree, against the house...

Deep litter method vs sand in the run

Hi everyone. I just started keeping hens in May. I got two of them......then hatched 4 of their eggs. So far all the chicks look like pullets my coop is 16 square feet and the run is 45. I am having problems with flies and stink in the run. My husband is quite unhappy about it. I was using the...

I am REALLY worried about this one.........

I think I freaked because the chick that is a day older has absolutely no wattle at all yet, and I mean nothing! So in comparing the two, my inexperience combined with the law of averages that 2 of the 4 should be Roos and my dread of having to give any up is making me see things that aren't there!

I am REALLY worried about this one.........

That's why I see those larger-but-still-small waddles and just KNOW one of them has to be a heartbreak......I mean rooster!

I am REALLY worried about this one.........

Love you guys! I know most of you are farmers and probably think I'm a bit silly,...I knew when I started incubating those 4 eggs that most likely there would be a rooster (or 4) that I would have to get rid of.....but I truly have fallen hard for these little twerps. They are so bonded. If one...

I am somewhat concerned about this one............

.....because like before, roosters are not allowed in my town. This is another "cochorp" (cochin/orpington) that is 6 weeks and 5 days old. If this one proves to be a pullet her name will be Dolly.Waddle, comb and saddle shots provided. :) This one's waddles are not as big or red as "Milly's"...

I am REALLY worried about this one.........

....because roosters are not allowed in my town. This baby is half cochin, and half orpington and is 7 weeks and one day old. The waddles are bigger and redder than the other 3 chicks I have. I hope this is a "Milly" and not a "Mo". Here are shots of the waddle, comb and saddle.

Cochin Lovers, are these pure or cochin/orpington mixes (do you think?)

Thank you for the lovely compliments! I just retread what I posted ab Nd I meant that I prefer purebred, not pure red!! Lol. So far they all still look like girls, comb wise. I may have to annoy you all again in a week or so with one of those" do they STILL look like pullets threads" though...

Please help---mystery predator ravaged my little flock. I'm devastated

I wouldn't mind seeing the pictures, but I don't think I would be of much help. I have only had chickens since May 18. I am so sorry for your loss. I know if I lost any of mine that way I would be inconsolable.

    SNAKE, SNAKE, SNAKE!!!!

I can and do see your point. I truly understand where you are coming from. One of my other hobbies is keeping snakes, I have several corn snakes in an array of colors and one big sweet old blotched king. With venomous snakes, I know that deadly measures need to be taken sometimes. I think...

    SNAKE, SNAKE, SNAKE!!!!

I know you want to protect your hens......but the snakes do perform a valuable service. The rodents they eat spread hantavirus, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and the plague. They can have a litter at only five weeks old and reproduce at an alarming rate. They destroy crops. Without snakes the...
