Thinking about getting some for my backyard flock. Does anyone know if they can fly? I know I could clip their wings, but I would like to know what I am getting into.
Thanks!
Hello! I got my second first egg today, so fun! I only have two hens so it's easy to tell. The egg on the top is the first egg from my australorp today and the egg on the bottom is from my BR who has been laying for 3 weeks. The australorp egg has a purplish brown color with a heavy white...
I think it would be really cool to do a BYC wide poll to learn more about what types of flocks people have big, small, city, country, age, use, duration, breeding etc etc etc
I waited until one of my hens developed a red comb and started squatting before removing my makeshift divider and adding a fake egg to each box. She got the point pretty quickly. A few shell-less eggs wound up under the roost. I assume they were a bit of a surprise to the hen that layed them...
I was wondering if anyone has experience raising hens to a nice old age with commercial layer mash? I have seen several articles or books mention that chickens live the longest on a commercial feed AND chickens tend to pick their favorite things out of mash, which makes one worry they aren’t...
Totally off topic but what breed is the beautiful white and black one in the front right???
On topic. They get a handful of scratch (millet, corn, sunflower, safflower, mealworm mix) to get them back in the run before I got to work. We also throw them fruit and veggie scraps and bug eaten...
Hi there,
This is probably a little silly, but I am on my first flock and still figuring out what is normal. I noticed that after my pullets range sometimes there are visible blades of grass in their droppings, like a fair amount of recognizable grass. Is this common, or does it suggest...
I am also new to raising chickens and my pullets just started laying too. The first 3 days one of my hens laid two soft-shell eggs a day. The assembly line just needed to get coordinated. Now she is laying a perfect pullet egg each day. Just let her get in the groove, its a complicated...
I feed Scratch and Peck layer free choice all the time and they range in the yard for a few hours a day. This is only my first bag of layer feed so I'm not too attached to a specific brand or grain v pellet. I also give them produce scraps from the kitchen and a handful of...
