    The Olive-Egger thread!

If you read up above your post just a little bit, Henk69 and Nicalandia (who are very respected members on the forum) have weighed in on this very question and the answer is yes, you can mostly expect olive egg laying offspring, though the odd hen might throw white/brown/blue eggs. But, in my...

    Tried everything...what am I missing??

No to all of those :( Poop has been off, was really stinky at first but is looking normal now; brown poop with the viscous clear liquid (gross, sorry). I regularly check for lice/mites/etc. She is in a coop of 30 birds, everyone else is 100%.

    Tried everything...what am I missing??

So. I'll make a long story short as I can...our fave hen (1yo) was looking 'off' over a week ago. She stopped eating and drinking. I have: wormed, checked for stuck eggs (with a gloved lubed finger), used clotrimazole cream, syringed olive oil into her to flush any impactions, treated for coxi...

Need Help. Your Coops "Must Haves"

Very valid point! At the time of writing I was going through a rough patch with a beloved hen who suffered a nasty skin tear at the hands (claws) of our roosters and wasnt thinking much beyond that. Any birds with new respiratory symptoms would/should always get isolated elsewhere, agreed, prob...

    The Olive-Egger thread!

Always great to hear your take on such matters, Henk. If I interpret correctly, it seems like such a long shot that it is not worth being concerned with in the grand scheme of the project and we can reasonable expect f2/f3 to continue to stabilize and even out the green colouration in subsequent...

    The Olive-Egger thread!

Quote: A Challenge I see.... let me try to explain this as careful *** possible as to make anybody understand what I am trying to say.. yes you are correct there are many brown egg shell genes, some recessive, some dominant, BUT there are also inhibitors of the brown egg shell gene, and...

    The Olive-Egger thread!

I must be missing something (in reference to that olive egg chart)....where Henk states on the kippenjungle calculator that the blue gene is dominant over white and in regard to brown "There certainly must be a number of brown eggshell genes and once you have them, it is difficult to breed them...

    Head scratcher....need more ideas...

Great ideas. It sounds like we all believe its something gastro/digestive. I will say that she is living with 4 other hens, none other have symptoms of coxi, and there is no blood in her poop, or anybody's. Also, she has been in a breeding cage 4 feet off the gound her entire life, so worms seem...

    Head scratcher....need more ideas...

Hey all, I'm a fairly experienced keeper and this one had me stumped. My one year old Silkie/D'uccle x and cherished pet of the children started acting 'off' a few days ago. Normally she's a fantastic eater, runs to greet me, vibrant and vocal. I found her huddled up with her tail down, feathers...

My two cents worth is this; dont get too caught up in the breed per se...for example when we started out as backyard flockers, two breeds I had heard were tame/lovely/docile (Barred rocks and buff orpingtons) turned out to be the biggest bummers of all. I have found that the best breeders to buy...

An isolation cage where a sick/injured bird can be separated for a rest, and meds administered separately.

I I just found some on mine a few weeks ago. Lice to be specific. and in my opinion a chicken with lice or mites is at a disadvantage. Cold temps, immunity low, and lice could that a disease a healthy bird could easily overcome tip the scales. I don't mess around. Sevin dust every time.
