Hi...I was givenn 8 male Barred Plymouth Rock males that a friend recieved with his duck order from a hatchery. I will keep one for my flock of RIR's but wanted to know if I can raise the others as meat birds? If so, can you please point me in thr ight direction to know how to feed and finish...
Thank you all. Do you know if I can keep a Barred Rocks rooster with my RIR's when he gets older? We weren't planning on having a rooster but I couldn't let something bad happen to these chicks!
A friend received 11 of these baby chicks (assuming males) when he ordered some ducks to raise and we have no idea what breed they are. Any ideas? I just received my RIR's chicks yesterday myself so this happened to be perfect timing!
Thank you to everyone for their advice and help. Since I only have the hens since Sunday I think I will give them some more time to get to know their new home then I will try letting them out starting with short periods of time before night. I will probably try this without a rooster at first...
this may sound like a dumb question, but with a rooster won't I have to worry about fertilized eggs? Does this change whether I can eat the eggs or not?
joebryant,
I have them in a 4'x8' area that is totally enclosed and has room to roost/sleep/lay. Is this sufficient in your opinion? Got the design from BYC. It's the Playhouse design.
thanks!
Thanks for the advice. Should I wait to get a rooster before trying to free range? Is there anything I would need to do different if I were to get a rooster? I'm still learning about the hens and their needs and don't want to get ahead of myself.
Thanks again.
Just joined and just got my first chickens this past weekend. Decided to do it for the eggs for the kids to have the experience. My 3 year old son loves them!!!
Thanks for all the help and advice from the site
I am a newbie who just bought three 1yr old RIR's and am really happy with them. I want to be able to let them free range in my yard but am worried abour how to get them back into the coop at night. The first day I had them, they all got loose and it was really hard to catch them! I have a few...
