    Cornish-X: How long in brooder?

Hi Y'all: Got my first (experimental) batch of 12 Cornish-X from the feed store last week. I have them in a playpen brooder on my porch. How long does it take these birds to feather out and be brooder-free? Thanks Suz in VT

    Adding electronic thermostat to Hovabator

Hi Arlee, Yeah.. I didn't really want to spend that much either. Blah. And, yes, I have now determined that as well, that the thermostat I just bought is more like a glorified dimmer switch. It will "turn down" or "turn up" the heat source to maintain the set temp. That isn't exactly what I...

    Adding electronic thermostat to Hovabator

Hi Everybody, I've been reading all the posts that refer to electronic thermostats. I have a turbo-fan hovabator that I'd like to add one to. I just ordered one of these...

    Nipple waterers

Hi: I haven't set it up yet, but I'm planning to make my own version of the henspa waterer. I bought a flat-backed bucket and a bucket water heater. I didn't by the self-heated bucket.. I'm not sure how those are wired up and I don't want to ruin it by drilling holes in it. I ordered some...

    Watering with Lixit Bottle

Hi Y'all: I have my three young birds drinking from a Lixit. I "trained" them to it by just sticking their beaks in there and getting it going for them. I think mine holds only 32 oz. Prior to that, I was using a rabbit waterer with the little bead in the end. I'm pretty sure that they...

Another Q: Mixing broilers and layers

Here's another Q from a first-timer. I'm getting 14 chicks, straight-run next week. I will brood them and then I have a coop that is supposed to be big enough for 10 full sized chickens. My plan is to keep as many hens as I can, and 1 rooster. The rest will be processed and put in the...

How much starter feed should I buy?

um, this was supposed to be a portable coop or tractor!!

Hi: I've been wondering how the Henspa wheels work; thanks Foxtrapper for showing us your design. I have a question about how the wheel "frame" attaches to the coop. It looks like the wheel axle falls right at the midpoint of the coop. And when you lift the handles, the whole thing pivots...

How much starter feed should I buy?

Greetings, everyone. I just ordered 14 chicks from Ideal. This is my first flock. I haven't bought starter feed yet. I checked it out at the local feed store last week; it came in 50 lb bags!! Will 14 chicks eat that much, or should I look for a smaller size?
