Well I contacted the person I got them from and turns out it's a frizzled Cochin. Somehow it got mixed up in the wrong brooder! It's growing out great, but I'm still unsure on the sex.

It is possible, I just hope it's a girl!

I like this for cheap and easy. You can box in one end for a small coop also.

I've used shavings and straw, but I think sand is the best by far! Do a search on using sand in brooders, everyone that tries it swears by it.

Here's one of my new chicks. Supposed to be a barred rock, but with frizzle wings and feathered legs I think the milkman stayed over a bit too long one trip...

So frustrated... Orscheln was supposed to get chicks yesterday, then they said the shipment wouldn't come until today. I went up there and now they don't know when they'll get them.

Another sand lover here. I've tried everything and it'll be sand from now on. For those worried about the cold temps, the sand heats up from the lamp and the babies love it. Honestly, my biggest reason that I like it is for fire safety. Shavings and straw can catch fire if your lamp is too...
