Well, you are obviously linguistically gifted :) Less well known breeds sounds like a good plan. I feel the urge to go chicken hunting around the world.
By discovered I mean the breeds popularity/existence outside of their home countries, or home regions. I was looking at the kadaknath breed from India and I want! I think I'm going to have to fly out there and bring some back in the 'ole backpack...
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll raise the dirt floor and throw in some sand for drainage. The moat idea is a good one too Thanks

The tarp and cardboard is something I'll try

I use the Deep litter method on a dirt floor. My coop is on a raised brick foundation over a pit...
I'm in London, Uk. In winter the soil is pretty much wet all the time. I wanted to go with a dirt floor so I could use the deep litter method but I'm now having second thoughts, mainly because the makeshift coop I've been trying this out with has problems with a couple of sick chickens, which...
I'm planning on building a chicken coop with no floor, so all the poop goes straight onto the soil. How feasible is this considering that the winters are wet here and the soil below the coop will most likely be wet?
Thanks
She was fine beforehand. However, one possiblity is the cold weather. She was still young and she born early winter (UK). A few weeks back I placed her in the outdoor coop which had a heat lamp in there.
It was a two month old Poland hen, I found it this morning lying on its side. Body twitching & head thrust far back. It looked like it was in a lot of pain. I culled it. Does anyone know what it could have been and also are there any good books on poultry diseases & cures ?
Thanks

Ok thanks
I know me bad. I was depending on my local city pet shop, they usually have chick crumb but sod's law not at xmas when I need it urgently. I'll be buying a years supply soon s I can get my hands on it.
I'm out of chick crumb and can't get any till after xmas (I live in the city). I've been feeding my day old chicks mashed boiled eggs so far. However, can I crush some growers pellets and feed them that just for a week?
Or is there any thing else I can be feeding them?
Thanks!!!
Ok, thanks for the replies I found a styrofoam incubator on ebay in the UK for $50 (£25). Staggered hatches can be a pain, but it's so hard finding all the eggs to fill the incubator in one go

Thanks Jen, I'm in the UK and they don't sell them here. I get the impression that temps in the last three days still must stay at 99.5 F ? I guess I'll need a second incubator
99.5 isn't going to be possible, so need to figure out if its worth making a hatcher or should I buy one. This is just for the last three days. Before that they'll be in a incubator at 99.5 for 19 days. It's only the last three days.
Anyone?
