    Yet undiscovered breeds

Well, you are obviously linguistically gifted :) Less well known breeds sounds like a good plan. I feel the urge to go chicken hunting around the world.

Smart *** :D A better question would be are there more amazing breeds out there that would make fantastic pets or good homested birds.

Sweet PDZ and DE to mix with sand in run to keep dust and odor down?

I have you considered adding hydrated lime on moist sand to create a loose dried crumbly natural mortar ?

    Yet undiscovered breeds

By discovered I mean the breeds popularity/existence outside of their home countries, or home regions. I was looking at the kadaknath breed from India and I want! I think I'm going to have to fly out there and bring some back in the 'ole backpack...

Floorless chicken coops and damp ?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll raise the dirt floor and throw in some sand for drainage. The moat idea is a good one too Thanks Quote: The tarp and cardboard is something I'll try Quote: I use the Deep litter method on a dirt floor. My coop is on a raised brick foundation over a pit...

Floorless chicken coops and damp ?

I'm in London, Uk. In winter the soil is pretty much wet all the time. I wanted to go with a dirt floor so I could use the deep litter method but I'm now having second thoughts, mainly because the makeshift coop I've been trying this out with has problems with a couple of sick chickens, which...

Floorless chicken coops and damp ?

I'm planning on building a chicken coop with no floor, so all the poop goes straight onto the soil. How feasible is this considering that the winters are wet here and the soil below the coop will most likely be wet? Thanks

I found young hen on its side, head back and twitching

She was fine beforehand. However, one possiblity is the cold weather. She was still young and she born early winter (UK). A few weeks back I placed her in the outdoor coop which had a heat lamp in there.

I found young hen on its side, head back and twitching

It was a two month old Poland hen, I found it this morning lying on its side. Body twitching & head thrust far back. It looked like it was in a lot of pain. I culled it. Does anyone know what it could have been and also are there any good books on poultry diseases & cures ? Thanks SC

Hatchery tempretures - how accurate do they need to be?

Ok, thanks for the replies I found a styrofoam incubator on ebay in the UK for $50 (£25). Staggered hatches can be a pain, but it's so hard finding all the eggs to fill the incubator in one go

Hatchery tempretures - how accurate do they need to be?

Quote: Thanks Jen, I'm in the UK and they don't sell them here. I get the impression that temps in the last three days still must stay at 99.5 F ? I guess I'll need a second incubator

Hatchery tempretures - how accurate do they need to be?

99.5 isn't going to be possible, so need to figure out if its worth making a hatcher or should I buy one. This is just for the last three days. Before that they'll be in a incubator at 99.5 for 19 days. It's only the last three days. Anyone?
