We are looking for 2-3 started pullets/hens to replenish our aging flock. We're open to any full-sized breed as long as they are good layers. Location is west of Phoenix. Thanks

    My Roo attacked me!!!

My sister was attacked by her roo, and after a $150 trip to the emergency room for stitches, antibiotics, and a tetanus shot, she sent him to crock pot camp! Seriously, the first time he attacked her, she brushed it off. The next time, he caused a nasty injury. I would not tolerate a roo that...

Happy New Year to everyone! Who will stay up until midnight and who won't? We usually manage to stay up until 10:00, so we can watch the ball drop on the east coast!

To use ACV or not. That is the question......

Our chickens love ACV. One of their favorite treats is "ACV Soup" - I take the fines from the bottom of the crumbles bag and mix them with water and a little ACV. I can't swear that it's doing any good, but it's not doing any harm! And they go crazy when they see me coming with the soup bowl...

We have a frittata for dinner whenever we get ahead on our egg supply, probably once a week. It's a nice way to use up leftover veggies, too!

No, the little birds fit through the openings. Not ideal, but at least it keeps the hawks and vultures out!

It's camo netting, which gives about 50% coverage - enough to hide the girls from overhead view but not enough to interfere with good air flow.

My chickens lay eggs ranging from medium to jumbo, so baking can be a bit of a challenge! Rather than have to calculate or guestimate every time I bake, I take a dozen eggs and beat them, then figure 1.75 oz per large egg. It really makes baking alot easier since I started doing this!

Your set-up looks nice. To protect from aerial predators, we used camo cloth - not only does it hide the chickens from the predators, it also gives them some shade.

We are much the same with our Christmas goings-on, too. We all get together for dinner at the home of one of the kids where we do a White Elephant gift exchange. My DH and I do stockings for each other and then get something for "us" which can range anywhere from a new blu-ray player (last...

Our RSL laid some huge eggs occassionally, but mostly, she laid 20-30 gram fairy eggs. After 2 months of erratic laying, she keeled over yesterday. No clue what happened. She was fine, squatting, begging for treats, eating, drinking and an hour later, she was dead - looks like she just...

Happy Thanksgiving! Be thankful for all you have!

I am thankful for my husband, our 3 kids & their spouses, all the grandchildren, (moderately!) good health all the way around, good friends, stable jobs, and the 22# turkey sitting in the brine before it gets prepped to go in the oven!!
