The best thing to do with a heat lamp is to NOT have a heat lamp. That is NOT from my 9 months experience as a chicken owner, but rather that comes from 26 years on the fire department.
We are on our first winter keeping chickens as well.. We are bit further north of you (grand Rapids...
okay so I had to google this.....
so of course there is actually an album called top of the flock.. According to this article they prefer classical
here is a link to the album... Who knew?
You are very wise to have gone big. I predict you will have 20 chickens a year from now. We are new to keeping chickens and went with a smaller coop so we have no room to expand. Right now it does not matter as our township ordinance limits us to 6 chickens. While we would love to move out...
i am doing the deep litter method with pine shavings. i considered painting the osb but ended up going with vinyl tiles. i would have preferred a solid remnant of vinyl but did not find something cheap at the time. my coop is only 6 months old, so it is still early but since i keep the...

Here is a good article on the subject of adding light. Click here
I have a light in the hen house and run. Right now the light comes on at 6am and shuts off at 9am. I also like this arrangement so the chickens are up and the coop is lit when I check on the chickens before I leave...
I have been a Firefighter for 26 years and have been to several structure fires where heat lamps were to blame.
If for some reason heat lamp is required I would aggee that finding a solid/permanent way to mount the lamp would be crucial. trusting the clamp would be a bad idea
Some people...
We are new to keeping chickens and it was apparent fairly quickly that there are not many people speaking highly of the prefab coops...
Except of course the wood construction prefab coops like Carolina coops. I love watching their videos on you tube. but they are gonna cost some $$$$$$$$$$...
Molpet
thanks for sharing that michigan information... I spent a few mins looking for michigan laws and only found some huge documents that I did not have the time or patience to sift through.
I am hoping we get a couple of neighbors that are interested in buying our surplus.
