Any chance you can cut the blood spot off without removing all the down underneath? Maybe mama is trying to remove it herself and not really cause a wound...
Nocturnal predators go looking for food wherever they like, including close to your house, under it, on the roof.... Coop placement will not change their behavior so put it where it makes the most sense for you.
Here in CA it's illegal to leave your dog chained up all day. Of course it wants to break free and start some trouble. This combined with the owners comment about shooting it leads me to believe he could care less about "his" dog. And probably any other animal for that matter. Why should you...
Try your best to catch one of your chickens then gently grab it's head and 'peck' at one of the nipples with the birds beak. Do so until some water comes out and you can see your bird drinking. That should be all it takes. Once one gets the idea the rest will catch on real quick.
I'm not sure of the predatory or feeding behaviors of weasels but having grown up in San Diego I can tell you that raccoons almost seem to have a "newspaper route," that they follow every night. They know where the food is on their route and they visit these spots every night looking for...
I've lived in San Diego all my life. We have everything short of bear here. You can definitely add raccoons and possums to your list as well as birds of prey. Bobcats and even mountain lions are occasionally seen in our suburban areas. The best thing you can do is completely enclose your run...
I've heard that treated wood isn't a danger to chickens mainly because they don't normally eat it. But seeing as how the use of copper based paint for boats is being phased out over most of the country due to its toxicity and the fact that it is used to kill fungus in labs, pools, etc I would...
I'm deferring to the experts who have already spoken of course. We recently had a feather picker and it was suggested to throw a couple handfuls of scratch around the run daily to keep the birds busy as well as spreading some alfalfa around for protein. It seems to have worked for us. I see...
I have to believe that whatever your treated wood is treated with is far more toxic than Kilz. I can tell you that we've had our chickens living in a Kilz painted coop and we haven't seen any ill affects yet. Just be sure to let it dry thoroughly before putting your birds in it. You can also...
Use something like Kilz primer/sealer from one of the big box stores. At least 2 coats will really extend the life of your wood. And if you don't like the color (white), you can always use an outdoor enamel type paint on top which will protect your wood further.
Doesn't look like a boy to me, but I'm probably the last person to ask.
I have a naive question for everyone. Is the color of the bird in question appropriate for a BO? It looks pretty dark compared to pics that I have seen. Other than the light colored head fuzz it looks a lot like my red...
Vertical screw-in nipples in a 2 gallon bucket. Do it, do it! You'll be thanking yourself. Water changes once a week, or less if you don't have the time. The chickens figure them out in very little time. We also just 'trained' a couple chickens to use rodent waterers with the straws and...
We're new too. Just went through this last week. Here is what we did.
-Separated bleeder and aggressive chicken (you'll need to watch them for a bit and see who's the most aggressive butt pecker.)
-Kept bleeder and mean chicken in small, separate pens in the garage. Slathered neosporin on...
