This is the longest hatch ever. The first chick pipped on Tuesday morning and one pipped last night. This means we are on hour 48 or so.
Interesting findings.
All the eggs from my most dominant hen have hatched.
Nearly all the eggs from the rest of my hens have hatched.
NONE of the eggs from...
There are some breeds that have a 5th toe on each foot. Salmon favorelles and Silver dorkings come to mind. There are probably others.
Is it an extra "back" toe?
3 more eggs pipping this am! (in the 'bator)
Thelma is very happy on the nest and I can hear soft cheeping from under her. She ate a few greens I gave her, but refused feed or water.
So the tally at this point is 1 chick hatched for sure, in the bator and now with Thelma... seems to be...
First chick is out!
Another chick is pipped under Thelma!
I have put the hatched chick under Thelma. So far so good. Its dark here, so hopefully Thelma won't know the difference.
Its gonna be a long night!
Sure look like Americauna chicks to me, at least just like the ones I've raised.
I just love the different color eggs they lay. If you learn which color each hen lays, you can keep track of each girl, and when she is "due" to lay!
Best of luck!
That's great news!
I am remembering now that one or two of the NH Red's eggs may have had a head start, as I had the Red hen in with Thelma, and of course Thelma would sit on any eggs Red hen laid. I looked at the date on the egg that is in the midst of hatching, and I collected it the same...
Cassey40,
Wonderful!
Looks like you are waiting for 6 more?
Would love to have your updates, if you have time.
I'm starting to worry as its been 6 hours since the first pip, and no one else is stirring.
Should I worry?
This is actually day 20... really day 19.5, as I set eggs at 5:30 pm, 20...
This waiting is pretty excrutiating! Still just the one pipped egg. Its from our most prolific layer, a NHRed... father is an Americauna. The chicks from this pair are always very active in the eggs, swimming about, and often the first to hatch. Funny thing is this hen has about a 4 to 1...
OK, I just took 6 not-yet-pipped eggs to Thelma, the broody hen. She has raised chicks before. I am optimistic she'll do well if any of these 6 eggs hatch.
She settled over the eggs just fine. First I took away the plastic eggs she has been trying to hatch for weeks! I think she will be...
Wow, and I was thinking the chicks weren't going to live. We had so many problems. First the egg turner was not working for several days and I did not realize it.
Then we had a power outage around day15 for a couple of hours. Incubator went down to 85 degrees.
Then I was just thinking I...
Well, that is exciting advice! She's a normal sized Americauna, except for the weight she's lost while sitting.
How can I tell if she can handle all 16? Is it just a matter of not being able to see any eggs poking out?
I have a VERY broody hen. She has been setting for a few weeks. I put 22 eggs in the incubator 12 days ago, thinking that only a few would be fertile. Turns out 16 are growing!
My plan was to put the good eggs under the hen and let her finish incubating and hatching them. But 16 seems like...
Thanks for the encouragement. I 'm also wondering, does anyone know what not turning eggs enough does? Do the chicks end up deformed? Or is it just a matter of them not developing at all...
I'm going to candle tonight, but I've got to wait until its totally dark, as I don't have a dark...
Just realized my egg turner was disengaged for a few days, probably between days 3 to 7.
What can I expect?
Is there hope? Should I start again?
I can get more eggs from my hens pretty easily.
