OMG! Day 20... first Pip!

That's great news!

I am remembering now that one or two of the NH Red's eggs may have had a head start, as I had the Red hen in with Thelma, and of course Thelma would sit on any eggs Red hen laid. I looked at the date on the egg that is in the midst of hatching, and I collected it the same day that I set the eggs. Certainly Thelma had already spent some time incubating this one.

So, we'll see what happens tonight!

First chick is out!
Another chick is pipped under Thelma!

I have put the hatched chick under Thelma. So far so good. Its dark here, so hopefully Thelma won't know the difference.

Its gonna be a long night!

and here we have my "loan wolf" at about 6 hrs old.

It seems to be hungry!!! It's picking at the membrain inside its shell it hatched from...like it's trying to eat it!! lol Took quite a poo as well.

3 more eggs pipping this am! (in the 'bator)

Thelma is very happy on the nest and I can hear soft cheeping from under her. She ate a few greens I gave her, but refused feed or water.

So the tally at this point is 1 chick hatched for sure, in the bator and now with Thelma... seems to be accepted just fine.

One other egg under Thelma was pipped last night, so could be hatched by now. Five other eggs under Thelma... we don't know their status.

In the incubator there are 9 eggs, 3 of which are pipped.

This is a very slow and drawn out hatching so far, but I realize that all the eggs from the NHRed probably had a head start as Red was housed with Thelma while Thelma was broody, so all the eggs got at least a few hours of incubating early on.

The good news is that finally two of this am's pipped eggs are from other hens. One is from my friend's flock, and one is from my other hens.

There are some breeds that have a 5th toe on each foot. Salmon favorelles and Silver dorkings come to mind. There are probably others.

Is it an extra "back" toe?
