    First Time Chicks...

Sounds good! Congrats... you may have to wait and see (or hear) if they are male or female... sometimes it takes a while before they start crowing. Here is a good tip: Yes, keep the light on all day and night... watch the little chicks. If they are huddled together away from the heat, the...

    Where do they lay?

Maybe you should block off the nest boxes for a week or so... Hopefully, they will find a new place to sleep. Once they have a new place to sleep, unblock the nest boxes, put in a golf ball and see if she does her job.

    Why won't they go outside?

My friend bought a new house. The owners left behind 2 hens and said that the hens were a little old... no age. It is spring time, warm and beautiful and her hens won't go out of the coop! She has an acre of fantastic weeds and she has to toss the chickens outside each day because they will...

    giving chickens away...

We need to give 2 of our hens away. They are great hens, but we are getting way too many eggs! A friend of mine has a great hen house and two hens that are old and no longer laying. She offered to take my two hens and we are wondering how to merge the hens for the best results. I suggested...

Can someone help a newbie with a chick-raising question?

I would think you would be fine leaving if someone is checking them twice a day. As long as the "chick sitter" knows they have to clean up daily and feed/water them you should be just fine! My advise: GO ON VACATION! Enjoy yourself! The chicks will be fed, warm and watched over.

I can't believe how many chickens you guys have

I must be the minority. I have a family of 5... two of them are teen's... I have 5 hens that are all laying. I get about 28 eggs a week! I am actually considering giving two of them away! I am hoping if I do, than I will have less mess and less noise. I had no idea these little buggers...

    Updating old coop

Personally, I'd keep it and fix it up. The basic structure is okay... chickens aren't picky! Fixing the door issue would be my first concern. I'd put plywood on the door instead of the chicken wire... at least on the bottom two thirds... might just leave the wire on the top third for...

Using a dog house as a coop for a couple birds. Total cost-175?

I have the same dog house and I converted it into a coop last year. I have 5 hens and they use it year round... I live in Northern California. I built nest boxes on the side... works out pretty well. I am planning on building a new one this summer. I think I need a higher roof inside since...

    Small Coop - Version 2.0

Your coop is great! Job well done: my two cents would be, consider a wider perch and get your chicken a few friends.

    Making mistakes with coop/feeding

Hi, I have 5 hens and they are getting along and starting to lay. That part is good. I had to scramble when I got the hens because someone gave them to me with little notice. I chucked together a coop with a dog house and I built a run around the coop approx. 6X8 and 6 feet high. Here are...

    My hens are LOUD

I live in a residential neighborhood and own 5 hens. I have 1 buff Orpington, 3 barred rocks and one polish. My buff started laying in November and the rocks just started this week. The polish is not laying and making me rethink her tenure in the yard (7 months old). My buff always lets out...

    Still NO egg... hmmm

All my other chickens seem to be laying... in fact, my young ones just started laying yesterday. I live in Northern California and it has been unusually dry and warm.

    Still NO egg... hmmm

I have a polish hen. She is almost 8 months old... still no egg. I was asked over the weekend if it was perhaps a rooster. It can't be a rooster, no crowing and no big tail feathers. I know she isn't laying in the yard because I kept it confined in the run for several days and NO egg...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

I got three today... BUT, since I've only had one a day for 6 weeks, I AM TOTALLY THRILLED! Finally, the girls are starting to lay! (I have 5 hens)
