    Transitioning from roofed to roofless run

    Are you able to cover the top with a heavy tent canvas? In precipitation, the fibers swell -- just like a camping tent -- and keep the girls dry. Allows for ventilation and shade. We have ours zip tied down. The canvas has lasted for a couple years now. It's not elegant, but works well.

    Why are coops built off the ground?

    When I had mine on the ground, the girls scratched up all the grass. That's okay, I had a cleared garden spot. Then, it rained, and rained, and rained some more.     Treats for chickens?

    Can someone tell me what kind of "treats" I can give my chicken? For now, she is getting crumbled chicken feed only, but I read that you can give chickens other food. We have been giving her crumbled egg shells as well for the calcium. Comments or suggestions?
