    Chickens laying first eggs/need advice

Collect them at least twice a day and put in an egg carton in the fridge with the pointy side down. Don't wash unless they get pooped on. Keep their nest clean. When you take them out of the carton to eat, start with the oldest first so that your eggs are always fresh. Enjoy!

Sudden heavy molt and now she's lethargic. What will help?

Your post was a few days ago, how is she doing? It doesn't sound normal to me, she is too lethargic. I would try giving her some water with a little sugar in it like we do for tiny chicks that are stressed.

    Protecting Hens from Japan Fallout!

Thank you Cass for your understanding. My philosophy is that it never hurts to be prepared and just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean there isn't any danger out there! You and some others have been very supportive. I just asked a question the other day and now I'm being told I'm wasting money...

    Protecting Hens from Japan Fallout!

My husband thinks I'm overreacting too. I'm one of those people that won't get dental x-rays unless I really really have to. I don't allow any chemicals in the house. I clean with baking soda or vinegar. It's kind of a phobia/OCD/General Anxiety thing. Back in the 70's I marched against the...

    Protecting Hens from Japan Fallout!

I see some of you had a laugh at my expense. That is OK because I know everyone has different levels of concern. My chickens are important to me and I feel that I'm responsible for their health and happiness. (no matter how silly it makes me look) Anyway, if anyone cares about what I think...

    Protecting Hens from Japan Fallout!

If a radiation plume passes over the United States, what can we do to protect our chickens and make sure their eggs are safe for us to eat? I'm taking Iodine but what can we do about chickens?

    night light for bugs?

Hi NCrikey. I'm raising my first flock and have 6 hens that are 6 months old. I put a light in the coop on a timer to attract bugs for the hens. I think it's a 75 watt bulb set to go on at dusk and off at 8:30pm. This gives them a couple of hours to eat bugs! I don't need to tell you how...

Is this early BUMBLEFOOT? (pics) If so... how to treat at this stage?

My RIR, Angelina, has a bump on the top of her foot between her toes. She isn't limping but I want to take care of it so it doesn't get worse. I live in the southwest desert and with temps in the 100's I've been giving the girls a pan with cool water to stand in. I put ice in it too when the...
