    Gen 2 Babies

I've been working on training out that prey drive but it's been tough (see my knees, he's pulled me over a few times) What I am finding the hardest is that he is not food or treat motivated and so it is proving a challenge to train him. Hence....how do I re direct that drive when I bring these...

    Gen 2 Babies

Hey all! It's been a while (insert guitar chord here) and having a flock of hens has been amazing. The problem has been el doggo. Y'see I got a doggo in December. I love him very much. He's a German Shepherd/Husky mix and is about 10 mos old. The problem: he has a significant prey drive. I'm...

    Damaged Feathers

Here is a bigger picture of her. I really need to clean the yard too.

    Damaged Feathers

Interesting. I did not know that damage like that could be due to being mounted. I no longer have a rooster because I only have 4 hens. He has been rehomed and she was his favorite to go after. Maybe the damage was always there and I just didn't notice. But I will watch the other hens more...

    Damaged Feathers

Hey there, I have another potential problem? I think this is caused by stress or molting but I also want to make sure I'm not missing anything. 1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) I have Link, who is about 18 months old at...

    Cracked Beak

Thanks! She's eating, drinking, and behaving normally so I'm going to monitor, keep it clean, and remove any things she could get stuck on. So far, she seems pretty normal but pain is hard for me to judge in chickens and the heat would make anyone cranky.

    Cracked Beak

Thanks for this. She's back outside with everyone and I caught her eating so that's good. I think I figured out what she got caught on, too. I got a pecking toy and it's hanging too close to the run's wall and I think she got caught between it. That's on me and I removed it. It's hard to tell...

    Cracked Beak

Well, darn it. My red sexlink did something to her beak. 1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) 1 year old red sexlink. I think this just happened. I was outside giving treats and she suddenly ran off. Since she's the Boss...

Some idea/No experience but sick hen

Same!! I know HPAI and state lines are a thing but I would love to get this boy to a group that could use his...er, attention hahaha. And I feel awful keeping him locked up when its not really his fault roos are just...like that. Tentatively coming to the conclusion that at least 8 hours of...

Some idea/No experience but sick hen

Thanks for this. I'm sorry you lost your bird, they have such big personalities and when I lost Daine I definitely got emotional. :hugs Link hadn't laid in 2-3 days which was what initially had me concerned because I've never dealt with an eggbound hen before. When she started just...standing...

Some idea/No experience but sick hen

Last update but I find it helpful to circle back around and close these loops when I can. I think we can safely say that the roo has been stressing the girls out. I put him in "chicken jail" (my coop that is so too small I only use it for isolation/chicken jail) for most of yesterday and a few...

Some idea/No experience but sick hen

It has been nearly a week and Link still has not laid an egg since that soft-shelled one on Thursday or Friday. She seems fine for the most part- appetite is back, she's scratching and pecking and even bullying the younger hens again. Occasionally I do catch her hanging out on the carport by...

Some idea/No experience but sick hen

Yeah, I was able to re-home the first one within a few days of realizing I had a cockerel. This one has been a bit harder, but I don't want to cull him. I also don't want him to wind up in a cockfighting ring (illegal but sadly still happens). Behaviorally, he's been rather fine up until this...

Some idea/No experience but sick hen

I would rehome the roo if I could find any takers. I am technically not supposed to have him, only hens for eggs. He sleeps in the garage so my neighbors don’t call the city on me for waking them up at 4am.
