Peas and chickens and ducks, oh my!

So I candles the eggs, it looks like I have three viable. Since she was out on the property, not in a safe place , I moved her and the eggs to somewhere ?I could secure. She was NOT HAPPY. She refused to sit. So after about thirty minuets, I incubated them. But after a day, I slipped them...

Peas and chickens and ducks, oh my!

We get home tomorrow and I’ll steal them and candle them. I doubt they are fertile, however, there are other peas in my neighborhood, so it’s possible.

Peas and chickens and ducks, oh my!

We’ve been on an rv vacation for a bit over two weeks. Today, the person watching my animals texted this picture to me! My peas are only about a year old. We got them fully feathered in August last year. I thought I had two hens, and I still may. But from what I heard, a year old hen would...

Peas and chickens and ducks, oh my!

Thank you. We are blessed to live here. We purchased the ranch as a short sale. The previous owners NEVER in the entire seven years they lived her did any maintenance, including landscape and interior. The house was a disgusting mess. But we saw the beauty in it. It took nine months to...

    Baby duck, still no progress!

Patience....is nearly impossible when a duckling is in peril! But patience you must have. Just a bit longer. I thought I had a dud, his brothers and sister hatched days before him. I always unhatch the dudes. And he was NOT A DUD!

Peas and chickens and ducks, oh my!

Well, It looks like I may not actually know the sex of my two yet. I thought that they were old enough to sex, but they still aren’t. Today while watching them, I noticed one is a bit bluer than the other, and it extends farther down its chest...fingers crossed for a matched set!

Peas and chickens and ducks, oh my!

Just a little update. My peas are hens. I find that kinda ironic. The only time I want cocks, and I get hens. The Peas occasionally fly over the fence to the neighbors place, but usually come back the same day, or before dark to roost. Last week, one was over the fence calling to the other...

Panicked!! Wrong duck air sac size!

I feel your pain. Mine were late too, my first duckling hatch. I ended up helping all four of them, some more than others. They all made it....lol. They are all loud messy brats being transissioned to the barnyard. It was very scary. I was trying not to get attached. They were all twitchy...

My first hatch....so much different than chickens.

I gave them sugar water as they were hatching. Although Bonnie loves loves her babies, I still don’t let her have unsupervised time with them. The trough is covered in screen. And yes, the incubator is their source. I have a heat lamp, but thought I’d try this. I’m always afraid of the...

My first hatch....so much different than chickens.

So everyone’s moving around normal now I was really worried about the last twitchy one, but I noticed all the ones I hatched took a little while to become more normal. They are all now eating, drinking and walking normally. https://photos.app.goo.gl/vkdXuNrfTWHCzwb4A

My first hatch....so much different than chickens.

They are Rouens. I have the Mama and Daddy as well. The last one is out, but still twitching. Does this only happen when they are Helped? Also, they all had this fine almost powdery looking fiber substance on them. Is it waste?

My first hatch....so much different than chickens.

I put six eggs in to hatch a while back. I wasn’t planning on hatching out duck eggs, but when I had that odd looking egg...not duck not chicken, I put five eggs in with it. Can’t have it hatch alone, it needs a buddy! It was unfertilized...lol Anyway. The eggs were past due to hatch. No...

    Chucks? Duckins?

Duck (mallard type)eggs incubate in 26-28 days. Three weeks would be nearly the entire incubation. Lock down is the final three days.
