I like to use aspen shavings. It doesn't have the chemicals that are released from getting wet, like the others do. It's also low dust and low smell (I raise reptiles too and this is what many snake breeders use for bedding). The sand idea sounds like a good deal too.
I would agree that it was a predator. I know that when a raccoon was trying to reach through the chain link in one of my chicken pens, it scared them enough for them to actually leave their roosts in the middle of the night and run around (which is what the raccoon wanted); then the raccoon was...
I have no idea where my previous post went, is this a forum that deletes stuff if they don't like it?
If it breaks the rules, yes. Posts can be deleted and warnings or violation notices are sent out. Post that quote a deleted post are also deleted.

Jmac, it looks like that would work.
If I understand it correctly, any males with double gold genes and a female with a dominant Silver gene would work; I think.
I never really paid attention to sex-linking until I have been making a point to study this myself recently, but my dark cornish male...

I'd never even think about shooting a neighbor's dog where I live. We all get along but then again, I'd bring it back to that person's place and talk to them about it and they'd just try harder to contain their dog. I would try any measures necessary to take care of my own chickens, in...
Yinepu, that is why I stated "laws differ upon where you are located".

Once, my dog broke off of his zip line on the 4th of July due...
I'm with you on the early October hatch date. I have a group of hatching eggs that I bought after searching the hatching eggs for sale thread for a while, before deciding what we wanted to try for. Most of them will be a surprise for my 11 year old son on his birthday in October. He's in 4H and...
If it helps, for the longest time I thought my hens weren't laying and it ended up being a rat that would go into the pen and steal the eggs. We caught it in the act one afternoon and had to leave traps (it actually ended up being 3 rats).

From my experience, my fayoumis DO go over to the neighbor's yards and roam quite a ways away; but on the other hand they are so quick and observant that they never get caught by predators (or, at least mine do not). If something spooks them, they come back home in a flash (and they...
