The 4 extra cockerels took a permanent vacation yesterday... the energy level in the coop was noticeably reduced just an hour later... I left the door open between the coop and side room and Calvin (the one rooster I kept) very nicely scooted her back over into the coop with the other girls...
This evenings check she's still hunched up, but poop is more normal colored... still has a watery mess with it, but not nearly so green... she has a full crop for the night, and seemed more normally sleepy vs lethargic... even talked to me a bit when I went in... still crossing my fingers... but...
Unfortunately I ended up with 5 cockerels... so they're in teenage jackass mode right now... the bigger girls just ignore them or run away.. and I've seen them get between her and the boys...
Oh... and I don't know that she was running a fever... when I picked her up the first time she actually felt kind of cold... which as skinny as she feels right now she's probably used up most of her fat reserves
Thanks... I checked on her a few times yesterday, she's eating and drinking, but still hunching up, also had some green poo with runny yellow liquid... everything I've been able to find seems to indicate that green poo is a sign of starvation....she pooped a lot of green over night (way more...
My blue girl (ameraucana) is "off" this morning... she's always been the smallest of the pullets I got this year, (unfortunately none are laying yet but that's a whole other grumble)... she's also lowest in the pecking order for the girls, I'm thinking they're actually running her off the...
Just feeling indecisive on what Avenue to take... not particularly attached to any one of the 5... hoping to make the best decision for the overall flock dynamics
Yup... was doing a bunch of reading on ameraucana vs easter eggers once I realized what I had... I'm more concerned right now with the "protection factor" of having a rooster around... we 100% free range, and while raising chicks sounds like fun... I don't know that I'm really planning on...
Depends what your goals are. The first bird is an Easter Egger. Good if you like a lot of random surprises, as far as chicks go. The other looks like a purebred Blue Wheaten Ameraucana
I was pretty sure I was getting some type of Easter eggers when I picked up this group... Unfortunately...
Soo.... thought this might be a good place to start....it's might be a bit long... but... I currently have 5 roosters... still in the growing stages... 4 are crowing ... one is still "playing pullet" and hasn't developed much beyond the feathers portion.... I really need to reduce the numbers...
Guess I'll just have to decide if I want to keep 1 of them, or find a rooster to match the other ones.. was hoping the one with the gold head at least was a girl... doesn't have much of a comb at all compared to the rest...
Ugh... thanks... I knew looking in the sale coop that the two with the black tails were... their Combs were pretty pronounced... I was ok with that... but not 5 of them... grrr
I'd posted these on a stand alone thread, but thought I'd stop in here too... I picked up two batches of 5 pullets on Tuesday... the group of black ones I'm pretty positive are all girls, but the other 5 have me wavering... 2 of them I'm almost certain are roos...(knew there was at least one...
