Ya, it probably has a lot to do with my loud and excited children. Especially my two year old who squeals in delight every time the chicks do anything.

Mine are the same age and I would love to know the answer to this as well. They are on chick starter/grower and they are outside in a penned area on nice days and eat various things that they find.
Most of my chicks don't either, especially my two black australorps. I do have two pretty docile wyandottes who tolerate being held but the rest scratch and flap and try to get away back to the rest of the flock.
I put mine out during the day if the weather is sunny and they are only about 4 weeks old. I just keep an eye on them but even with temps in the high 50's they have been happy and scratching.
This is my first time raising chicks. I had planned to get 6 chicks but ended up with 10 from a local seller. I also thought I picked out 4 black australorps and 6 silver laced wyandottes but it's looking like only 2 of them are australorps and the other two were just very dark wyandottes...
