    Help! Injured hen!

With the condition of her back, it looks like she is getting too much attention from a rooster. It could be a spur injury. I would suggest that you keep her separated from the other birds and keep the wound as clean as you can. If you can find a way to close the wound some, that would help too...

    My Pet Chicken (Hatchery)

I ordered chicks from MPC in late February 2020 for the March 2nd hatching. All pullets, 3 Buff Orpingtons and 5 Easter Eggers of hatchery choice. They arrived on time, super well packed and all were very vigorous and healthy. So far they all seem to be female. While the cost was a little bit...

    Winter Hatch Along!

Any luck with the second batch? My babies are 18 days old today and had their first day outside. They had a blast!

    Winter Hatch Along!

Congrats! The babies are sooo cute. Give the others a little time. I usually give the eggs a good sniffing if i suspect that something is wrong. If I detect an odor I get rid of the egg.

    Winter Hatch Along!

I am hoping that you have chicks by now. If not yet add some water to get the humidity up and hope for the best. After the pip if they havent hatched in 15-18 hours you may need to give a little, minor help. But that is tricky business. Just remove small pieces of the shell at a time and STOP at...

    Winter Hatch Along!

Fingers crossed for your hatch! The chick I hatched is doing great, 1 week old today. The other 8 chicks I ordered from the hatchery all arrived safely and are doing great as well. The brownish one in the foreground is the one I hatched.

    Winter Hatch Along!

It looks like you have decent size air cells in those eggs. If they get too big the baby may be shrink wrapped in the membrane and have trouble hatching. I don't candle that often. I try to keep it to day 10 and 18. When I do candle on day 18 I use a pencil to mark a circle where the air cell...

    Winter Hatch Along!

The air cell in my egg looked like day 14 on that chart when it went into lockdown. I have 2 more eggs in the incubator that are on day 10. I put a couple in late when I tossed the other eggs. I also ordered 8, day old chicks that should ship today.

    Winter Hatch Along!

When are you expecting your eggs to start hatching?

    Winter Hatch Along!

The egg just pipped about 1:15 PM today. I was getting worried, the egg was moving around a lot yesterday, but not so much today.

    Winter Hatch Along!

The single surviving egg from my hatch is moving around today, expecting it to pip anytime now. It looks like I may get a leap year baby. :celebrate:celebrate

Has anyone had a hen with these symtoms?

Check the belly area behind her legs. Is it soft and pliable or swollen, firm and hard. I had a few birds that had fluid build up in their abdomen, a condition called ascites. The fluid will build up until they suffocate. This is caused by a disease of some internal organs. If this is the case...
