Welcome to my world!
I bought chickens and a tractor in order to have fresh eggs. Within a week I fell in love with my Rhode Island Reds and wanted them to be happy and at "home". I found a RIR Rooster..... they thought He was She, and called immediatley to aquire him. Within 2 days, I am...
One of mine does that every day... I hear the others raising cane cause they need to use the box. I am waiting for her to come out with a newspaper under her wing!
I didn't think it was possible to love my 4 hens any more than I already do.... but today I went out to sit with them while they were free ranging, and one came over to me, stretched out to sunbathe and starting purring! I swear it sounded just like a cat... my heart just melted. I should...
Not over fifty, but feel like it.... and have the joint replacements to prove it.... have senior moments, and have chickens in my backyard that have become childlike spoiled pets.... can I join?

I found some REALLY cheap canned crab meat the other day, and was going to make crab cakes. Opened a can and gagged it was so fishy smelling! Started to throw the can away, then changed my mind and took it to the hens.... They went wild!!!!! Have never seen such a commotion!
I give my girls kefir grains and whey mixed with fast cooking oatmeal mixed with cayenne. I mix a batch each week, and then store it in the fridge and feed twice daily. They try to get it as I am spooning it into their bowl. But that's just my girls..... for instance, they HATE all greens...
When you drive 40 miles to get fresh crickets in the container with holes in it (so the crickets come out slowly) for your girls, and it's considered "part of your grocery shopping"
I don't want to discourage you.... but I had a RIR roo that was extremely aggressive....I tried everything listed on BYC and then some. I finally had to admit defeat and give him away, and the hens are now thriving and very happy... I think they appreciated they fact that he is gone. They have...
