HetaChick, I've got a broody sitting on 4 eggs. one got laid by her sister days after the first batch so its still little and responds, but the other three are big and ready to hatch any minute. i cant tell if theyre ready or not but i can hear cheaping so should i poke a hole in the egg to get...
Do you think a heavy duty cardboard treadle feeder would work for a short time frame? wanna test it out before i commit to making a you-beaut wooden one. (my girls are beautiful but theyre dumb as dirt)
Thank you both. Very good tips :)
My girl is definately broody - the pancake is a **** good description lol - but she laid an egg so now im just confused :| I thought broody hens could lay eggs. dangit. im just putting the others eggs underneath her as i go and hopefully something comes from...
My sister has lent me her Frizzle roo to breed with my Silkie hens. Yesterday He (Albert) mounted one (Sylvia) and today she has laid an egg and has been very broody for the past week. Because I have other hens and they have a nasty habit of sharing nesting boxes I found her today sitting on her...
My sister says if you collect the eggs the day they're laid and put them in the fridge it can still be eaten even if it is fertilised? I hope she's right
My 3 Silkies run from me now that they know little sister Chaz the Austrolorp is my favourite. She sits on my shoulders while I hang the washing out and knows that when the sun is setting 'daddy' comes home and waits by the fence until my partner comes home from work. She gets so excited when...
I had a real gem come up at work one day. Coworker asked "isn't it like the lottery thoug? not knowing if your boiled egg will have a baby chicken in it?" she then looked very sad.
without laughing,I explained I didn't have a rooster so it is very very unlikely i'm eating a baby chicken. I then...
Yello,
I'm in Bundaberg QLD. I'm only 21 but crazy for my girls. I've got 3 silkie hens and a 3 week old Australorp chick.
We got hammered here in Bundy with the floods but thanking our lucky feathers our home was untouched.
I spent a good 6 hours securing the coops in torrential rain and wind...
I live in Australia. From my own experience I have seen bantam silkies and Silkies the size of small dogs lol. So that's what I was talking about with the different breeds. I own 3 LF Silkies which give my mum's Rhode Island Reds a run for their money :p
Ahhh Fierlin1182 you know all the right things to say! I want more friends for chaz, so I could have 3 of each breed but my partner is already getting concerned of my new hobby of collecting chickens since in 2 weeks i've gone from promising to only have one to now having 4 :p But names would be...
Its a bit weird to see but basically the bulge on her right side is what im talking about. These pics were taken when it was at its biggest but its now about half the size but still there. kind of feels like its full of sand or grit?
Hi,
Im new to chickens on my own but as a kid Mum had heaps. I used to absolutely despise them because the Rhode Island Reds are a bit loco (I blame it on the fact she feeds them cooked chicken!! Ick) But since getting my own Silkies and Australorp I'm getting a bit obsessed and can see why...
Surely can. If you breed a Frizzle with a Silkie you get Sizzles. Cutest things out but I myself prefer my purebred Silkies. You can also get Silkies that are the same size as regular chickens, its only the Bantam Silkie thats pretty small.
