We got SO MUCH SNOW - and it didn’t stick, just snowed all day.
The girls didn’t know what to make of it.
These freeloaders still don’t want to sleep in the coop, and to add insult to injury they’ve been laying eggs on the floor under the coop instead of the nest boxes.
I tried putting some...
It’s a beautiful day to swap out fly traps…
Calamity - the same hen with the issue last week - decided to helpfully remind me that I’d bought “fly inn” traps to swap with the cheap normal sticky traps because the inns have a cover over the sticky section to keep the hens from flying into them...
Well my local vet doesn’t do it, so I may be stuck driving 45 mins to our avian vet.
One of the other girls had a really watery dropping while I was cleaning out the coop - dunno if it was a panic poop or if there is in fact something funny. I guess I need to hop on the phone with our parrot’s...
Should I dose with Corid? I had started with the “moderate”’dose level (3/4 tsp to gallon) yesterday but didn’t re up today as it just didn’t look like cocci.
I may also call my vet and see if they’ll do a parasite panel on a stool sample.
She is back to her normal self now. Her vent looks normal, maybe a small amount of discharge.
I have powdered Corid but wasn’t sure if if I should give it or not, since there isn’t a lot of blood in the stool.
What’s the best way to give calcium citrate, and what form/where should I get it...
Have an isolated silkie due to lethargy and a small prolapse that seems to have resolved itself. It’s hard to separate her stool from the wood chips but she managed to do this one off the chips and it’s got some orange bits in, and I can’t decide which these are. I was going to do a round of...
It’s 5 days at a full dose followed by another 7 at a tapered dose. Corid is a thiamine blocker and not an antibiotic so there is no egg withdrawal period.
I did see a small amount of blood in the stool, but it could have also been shed intestinal lining. I’ll be keeping an eye on her today...
Yeah, I noticed that too re: comb.
I just-in-case dosed with Corid for hers and the coop waterer, 3/4 tsp powder to a gallon. I assume it wouldn’t hurt them. She had a few weird looking stools. I’ll keep an eye on her and the others and do a 5 day course, but when I checked on her before I put...
Last update: I soaked her vent anyway, then gave her a bath because she smelled like chicken coop and it’s a tiny bathroom. For now she’s in there with some food and water and a night light, on newspaper, but I’m going to put some wood chips down on top the newspaper once I pick up some more. I...
So I wrestle this bird into the house, get a soak ready and - now her vent looks normal.
I’m keeping her inside anyway for observation but what the heck?
Ah!
One of my silkie girls started laying and today I went out to see them and her vent is prolapsed.
I’ve never had this happen before. I’m soaking her vent in an Epsom solution right now and I sent my wife out for some prep H. The plan is to keep her in the basement bathroom with the lights...
Yeah; the new bedding is starting to clump up in a way I don’t like, so I think I’ll bring them inside and give them at least a little foot bath. I don’t want to get them all the way wet if I don’t need to in this weather; they tolerate being handled but it’s not their favorite, lol. They do...
The good news is that our new Polish hen Oreo is getting along great with the silkies.
The bad news is she doesn’t want to go in the coop at night either. But they have no problem going up there during the day? I don’t get it. Maybe I’ve got the auto door set to close too early? It closes at 6...
My wife posed them up on the branch, haha. They like the branch better than the boards! I thought silkies liked the flat perches more but not these guys!
Picking the polish pullet up Friday morning. I have a dog kennel to let them see each other before I try introducing them, I’ve heard it’s...
