Hi everyone. ..
I have a small flock of 9 laying hens. They have never been exposed to a rooster. I picked up a Speckled Sussex rooster and want to integrate him into the flock...any suggestions?
Thanks.
Currently have:
3 Black Australorps
2 Buckeyes
2 RIR
2 Barred Rocks
1 Speckled Sussex
The Sussex is the most curious and friendly one of the flock. Plan to add more Sussex and Wyandotte in the future.
I have no experience with breeding chickens but am curious...why do you think hatchery roosters are more mean? How long can you use one rooster to service one small flock of 8-10 chickens before he should be replaced? I would think that the gene pool would need to be refreshed after some time...
There are many people who raise mixed flock chickens. Mixed chickens generally do well together. To me it makes it more interesting to have different breeds. They are easier to tell apart and easier to tell which chicken laid which egg. The breeds you have selected should do well in the climate...
So do you recommend buying a grown rooster or raising one yourself? Should you get more than one and cull the ones who don't measure up? Any recommendations for a type of rooster for a mixed flock of laying hens is appreciated. Thanks.
That's interesting about your roosters...we have been debating back and forth about getting a rooster and have still not decided. I can see the positives and negatives. But they can be ornery....I remember as a kid we had a leghorn rooster that would chase me into the dog house....my mom and her...
Thanks for the info....I didn't realize roosters had different instinctive traits. If you are raising a rooster from a chick how long does it take before you know if it is a protective one?
I'm in a similar situation. The brooder is ready and the coop is almost done. I chose what I hope are calm egg layers. Black Australorp, Barred Rock, Sussex, RIR. Good luck with you flock.
Thanks for all the info. I am rethinking adding a rooster to the flock. It sounds like they do help in their own way. We live in a rural area but do have neighbors....how far do your chickens range from the coop?
Do you recommend having a rooster for flock protection or can you get by without one. We don't have any issues with having a rooster but if it adds another layer of protection it may be worthwhile.
You have beautiful birds. I also thought about posting to the middle Tn thread but was hoping to talk to people closer to my home. We will be starting with 10 chicks that are due to arrive the first week in April. After much research we chose Australorp, Barred Rock, Sussex, RIR and Buckeye...
