    Hi everyone. .. I have a small flock of 9 laying hens. They have never been exposed to a rooster. I picked up a Speckled Sussex rooster and want to integrate him into the flock...any suggestions? Thanks.

    What do you have in your flock?

    Currently have: 3 Black Australorps 2 Buckeyes 2 RIR 2 Barred Rocks 1 Speckled Sussex The Sussex is the most curious and friendly one of the flock. Plan to add more Sussex and Wyandotte in the future.

    I have no experience with breeding chickens but am curious...why do you think hatchery roosters are more mean? How long can you use one rooster to service one small flock of 8-10 chickens before he should be replaced? I would think that the gene pool would need to be refreshed after some time...

    Opinions please! Best breeds for a small mixed flock

    I'm in a similar situation. The brooder is ready and the coop is almost done. I chose what I hope are calm egg layers. Black Australorp, Barred Rock, Sussex, RIR. Good luck with you flock.

    Do you recommend having a rooster for flock protection or can you get by without one. We don't have any issues with having a rooster but if it adds another layer of protection it may be worthwhile.
