    Texas

Howdy there Import... not in B-CS, but have certainly spent some time in the Brazos Valley! Interesting story from our friends over at A&M and the Extension Service... If you're in Texas, and looking to start raising chickens (or are still a newbie), this might be worth checking out...

Need some advice - Neighbor wants me to keep her ducks with my chicks

Well, there's several issues here... First - ducks are very messy compared to their chicken cousins. They love to splash in the water dish, and they seem to poop about three times as much as chickens. Second - Yes, they could pass diseases to one another. Of course, depending on where you...

    Turkey's and chickens

Some folks say no because of the risk of blackhead disease spreading from your turkeys to your chickens. Personally, last year I raised turkeys with chickens with no problems, but my turkeys only made it to butchering age. Your mileage may vary...

    Ideal Poultry

I'm a big, big, BIG fan of Ideal. Great to work with and excellent birds. I've bought directly from them and also through my local Atwoods (their birds are Ideal birds). Good prices too. I got ducks, chickens, and guineas from them last year. I assume my turkeys are also Ideal, as they came...

    Chickens for the Texas Heat

Welcome to the world of chickens! As far as the heat, it got awfully hot up here in Northeast Texas this summer (110+!) and I and out of close to 100 birds at the time, I only loss two chickens to the heat. One was a Broiler that my daughter adopted, and as such I wasn't allowed to process and...

Best online store for ordering chicks...

I have only ordered from Ideal, otherwise have picked up my chicks from TSC, Atwoods, and one Kindergarden teacher that lived in a major metro area. I love Ideal for several reasons, and they don't charge an extravagant shipping fee in Texas. Because of shipping concerns, I would generally...

    Giving Away a yoong roo...worried.

Quote: Maybe not in StL, but go back 44 towards Joplin and on down into OK and AR... Cock fighting still reigns supreme in many parts of the Ozarks and down here in the "foothills"... I want to say OK was the last state to outlaw cockfighting.

    Texas

There's a Valley Feed Mill just down the road in Clint... if it's anything like the VFMs we've got in Paris and Winnsboro, it's a real, full service feed mill, not a store...

    Does TSC have a minimum...

Hen is cute! : Quote: in my area, the limit is 6. They don't want them to die of lonliness? I think it's an attempt to stop folks from buying 1 or 2 chicks for their kids. You know, Easter Chicks? It's in the best interest of the birds, I believe.

How much does it cost to raise a meat chicken?

It does cost more, but here's why I do it. I grew up here, in the heart of Pilgrim's Pride Country. In fact, when I went out on patrol this afternoon, I passed Bo's HQ, Feed Mill, Freezer Locker, Bank, Mansion (Cluckingham Palace), and Prayer Tower. I've been in the laying houses, broiler...

    Does TSC have a minimum...

Don't believe there's a State Law in Texas regarding it, but our TSCs around here have a 6 chick and 4 duck minimum. Atwood's has no minimums that I'm aware of (and can attest to that as I bought a signle replacement gosling last Spring there)

    Baking w/ducks eggs ?

Quote: I wish it was legal to buy raw milk in Louisiana. They're still real stringent on how it works in Texas, I'm just fortunate to have a participating dairy about 6 miles past my work. http://www.jerseygirlsmilk.com/ is the place I buy from. Their yogurt is also wonderful, we...
