    Rat proof feeder

Hello there, We live in the country north of Seattle WA, have 8 chickens and a now known rat problem. I've been using the nipple water feeders but 5 gallon layer pellet feeders on the ground along with a "flock block"......bad choice on my part as we now have rats. Are you completely happy...

Cranky Hen won't get out of nesting box nor let others lay - thoughts before isolating her or tradin

So she is still broody, bitchy, growly and the Chicken Family Egg Stealer. So what if I do this.....let her have her 5-7 eggs she hoards then one morning gently insert a 1-2 day old baby chick for her to find and raise? My concerns: Will she either feed herself or walk the baby down the plank...

I agree in I would love to just let her be and appreciate the faux egg idea. The challenge is she is really bitchy, won't let the other 5 hens into lay and goes after them some when she is out and about. How about some Chicken Prozac? lol

Will search for it, thank you. Is there a guesstimate how long a Hen stays 'broody'? She his a real handful to move but no problem.

Super, thanks. How long does her being 'broody' usually last? When I grew up and had chickens....they all just laid.

We have 6 hens that we raised from day olds last May 2012. 2 Barred Rocks, 2 Gold Laced Wyandottes and a Black & Gold Sex Link. They all get along fine and have been laying 6-8 eggs a day since they were two months old & they're happy hens. The coop is clean, we use a deep nesting method of pine...

    Chicken Poop and the garden

Whew....I just cleand out my coop where I use pine shavings & food grade diatomaceous earth employing the "deep nesting method" and poured a 5 gallon bucket full on each of my 4'X4' raised veggie beds turning it into the soil. Hopefully in WA state it is not too late....is it?! BOCK!!

Booted our six 4 week olds out into their heated pen in Stanwood WA today!

Thanks GardenGal! Both my daughter and 7 yr old son love their chicken babies & we hand raised them inside for the first 4 weeks. All anyone has to do is put their hand in the cage and they hop on looking for a ride & some love. We fenced 1.5 acres of our property off and by the time they are...

We picked up 2 Barred Rocks, 2 Gold Laced Wyandottes and 2 Sexlinks...gold & black when they were 3 days old. Heartiest chicks for Stanwood WA?

Turned our 7'X14" chain link dog run into a chicken coop, covered the top with chicken wire, 1/3 hard roof for wind/rain/weather resistence and sided half of the back corner & side also for weather protection. Put in two Dogloo houses, ran some sticks through for roosts and am building two...
