Good morning I'm glad I found this thread. I agree! I was just thinking about posting to a thread but no one is talking anymore about the topic of the thread so it was kind of a bummer. I kind of feel like it's difficult for a new arrival to jump in, it's kind of like somebody interrupting a...
All this talk about egg eating chickens reminded me I needed to check my nesting box!
(Whew! All there...)
Here's my two cents worth: if I had to rehome an egg eating chicken I would feel so obliged to tell the new owner she's an egg eater and around here not many people would want an egg...
Hey congratulations! Cute picture too! from what I understand, the first few eggs are usually like that (small, lopsided, etc) I wouldn't worry about it too much.
Buy some oyster grit if you haven't already done that. It should make quite a difference in the eggshells.
Waiting for...
Thanks everyone for your wonderfully funny and heartfelt comments. I can see very easily how much we all love and appreciate our chickens!
The Purple Coop
Hello everyone,
Since I'm new to chicken ownership, I have been carefully observing my four hens. The other day I was watching them and all of a sudden I was Touched with understanding as to what they were saying. They have a very basic language, and when they coo and cluck they say things...
Emsanon,
Hello and welcome! I highly recommend getting a book entitled The Chicken Encyclopedia. It's been a tremendous help to me and very informative.
If you'd like to check it out, here is a link...
@Hinotori ok thanks, I thought I read something about there being a new thread and I wasn't sure if I was on it or not. I enjoy reading what people are posting. :-)
Hello everyone! Is this the new Washington State thread? If not, where do I find it so I can subscribe and get regular updates? Thanks!
The Purple Coop
I wish I could free range my chickens but the best I can do is provide some more chain linking and enlarge their living space. Right now they are in an 8x10 foot kennel run, which is covered with chicken wire, and inside is where the coop is. It's well ventilated, and four chickens share one...
CarolynF, thank you so much for your insight and advice. You make an excellent point about birds in the wild. I'll definitely rethink my position on the heat lamp and covering.
Thanks a lot and God bless you!
@Rainier my neighbors are doing something similar with their chickens except for the free range part. So far the only table scraps I have fed my hens are leftover rice and scramble eggs, and some mashed apples from my apple tree. I like the idea of giving them hot oatmeal during the winter...
@catface you have so many chickens to care for wow. I just found something that said 1.5 lb of feed per layer per week. So thats not much and I may be setting out too much food. I wish I could free range like you! But I am expanding thier run soon. Thank you so much for your ideas! God bless.
