Thanks Chicken Canoe...I will try the fake or real egg placement in the neglected box and see if that helps. I try to collect them as timely as possible but depending on the day sometimes they do sit there all day until we get home from work but so far, none of them seem to be pecking at their...
Couple of issues with our newly egg-laying hens...
Sometimes they lay their eggs while on their roost (during the night I think while they're sleeping?) and they fall and crack on the floor of the coop. How can we prevent them from doing this and/or will they just grow out of it eventually...
Hi Holly, We've got one of each breed (Americauna, Buff Orpington, Wyandotte, Astrolorp and a Brahma) and our Americauna was the first to lay last week at 19 weeks old. People have been posting about the "submissive squat" and it's true! Prior to laying our Americauna started rigidly squatting...
Thanks Aart. Are soft shells safe to eat? We figured we'd cook it up and feed it to our birds just to be on the safe side. These creatures never fail to amaze me!!!
Hi chicken friends...I'm new to this, one out of my 5 girls are laying eggs. She's laid 4 beautiful small blue eggs over the last 5 days. Today however, I came upon her 4th blue egg and one underdeveloped egg that has no shell. It's being held together by the inner membrane which is very...
Interesting...yeah, my girls didn't show any interest in their nesting box until the "appointed hour". I'm sure it'll be any day now, make sure to post a pic of the egg when she finally lays!
To answer one of your questions, I don't think size has much to do with egg production per say. We have 5 different breeds (Brahma, Buff Orpington, Ameracauna, Silver Laced Wyandotte and Black Astrolorp) and our smallest with the least developed comb and waddle has layed first at 19 weeks...
We got our first egg from our first flock! Marion, our Americauna is the star laying a pretty light blue egg at only 19 weeks old :) Proud chicken parents right here!
We got our first egg today about 30 min after I joined and posted my first message! ha! At 19 weeks our Americauna, Marion, layed a small light blue egg. It's perfect, we are proud parents :)
To Micheal Oshay - our Black Astrolorp is definitely the calmest of the bunch, very much a follower...
Funny question perhaps but I have a tiny bit of ginger flesh and skin leftover from making my morning smoothie, any reason I can't give it to the girls?
We are still waiting for our first egg! Our girls are all about 19 weeks old.
We have 5 different breeds, one has a full comb and large bright red waddles but the others have varying degrees from no waddles with a small bump instead of a comb to small comb w/ small waddles. Does this...
