I am about to get some 3 day old silkie chicks. I have raised several sets of regular egg laying chicks, but these are my first silkies and bantams. Anything I need to do differently or watch out for with the tiny little creatures?
They won't use the bucket as long as the gravity waterers are available. Let them run out of water in the gravity waterers and they will figure it out. They are messing with you. :)
Unless you have a plumbed in water source, the advantage of nipples to me is keeping the water clean. Also it is cheaper to make the buckets than to buy that many hanging waterers.
Yes, I quickly realized a hole in the lid was in order. A small vent hole won't hurt anything.
I think it will be fine, but if it does swing too much take a piece of rod and wire it to the joist mounted hook and down the chain for a few feet to take some of the swing out of it. It is just a chicken feeder it is OK if it swings some.
I have a home made bucket with nipples in the bottom and also hang a smaller regular waterer each day when I gather eggs. Some but not all of the chickens get really interested in the regular waterer each day. The regular waterer is always dry every day. They drink it first and then move on...

Free range doesn't necessarily apply just because you let them out of the coop. To me, free range means they can go where ever they want without anything barriers (physical or your control) to stop them. I am guessing that the law was enacted so your neighbor doesn't have to...
What I was really hoping to find out is if I should even bother with roosters, and if so of the common breeds are there any that are known to be good (or poor) roosters for a mixed flock that turns over a couple times a year? Any that will better/worse as I add juveniles to the flock? I...
Sorry for the long post, I am fairly new to the chicken world (having raised many other types of animals and livestock). I need some rooster help.
I am looking to keep between 20-40 laying hens. Currently I have 3 grown Rhode Island Reds, 7 IsaBrowns that are 9 weeks old, and a mix of 18...
I was checking out at my local TSC yesterday (KY/OH border) and heard a massive amount of cheeping. One of the employees was walking in carrying a large box of chicks he had just picked up from the post office (he was complaining about the postal service). The box was from Townline. He said...
