I have three pullets, one our RIR started laying on Sunday, so we started offering oyster shell, free choice. Our other two birds, a BR and Aussie haven't laid yet but they are ALL ABOUT the oyster shell. Is it ok for them to eat it? They are 27 and 25 weeks and they get a grower and layer mix...
Wondering if any I you solved your watery poop issue? I've got one hen that does this, almost clear. It's a nice 75 degree California day and still, watery poops. Like someone before me said, I too give my girls ACV in their water.
I'll get some shell then. How interesting that they can tell when they need it. They all spread their wings and squat down when I reach to pick them up, I've heard that is a sign. I've not been able to check their pelvis bones, honestly I am so new to this I was impressed that I could check...
Thank you. I'm not sure if any of those applies to us. The vent check didnt reveal a pink or wet vent, so maybe they are just not ready, their combs are still pretty pink, not red. We got the Austalorp about 4 weeks ago as a 20 week old and so is newer to the flock. They are all getting along...
I have 26 weeker RIR and BR and a 24 weeker Australorp, no eggs? They are on a mix of grower/starter and layer (because I had so much grower left over and knew they'd soon need layer). They get produce scraps and forage the yard, acv in the water and all that jazz. Am I doing something wrong?
The original two let the new bird sleep in the coop last night. It took about 35 min of everyone trying to settle in before she was allowed to sleep in a nesting box. I guess this is progress but she won't come down out of the coop. The others are out and eatin and it's like she's a little...
Yes, being pecked to death is not something I want to encounter for any of my chickens. They are in the yard together and the original birds don't pay much attention to the newbie unless she is near something they want or if she comes to their end of the yard. I've seen a few feathers pulled and...
Thanks very much. My post was so long, I'm so grateful that anyone even read it! So, do you think I should allow them to be in the coop together, without the dividing wire?
We are very novice chicken keepers. We got three pullets 2 weeks ago from a ranch where they were raised. The three were brought home together, stayed in the coop for a full week before I let them out in the yard and established their pecking order quite well, and with no blood shed. That was...
I'm pretty sure Dorothy is in fact a she, but our BO just turned out to be a roo so I'm questioning things now. Can anyone tell me what they think and what grounds they base their info on (I'd like to learn as much as I can). Thank so much!
My 5 month old BR has a very small
Comb and wattle and they are pink in color, I'm guess she's a she and he's a he. I know this is a very old post but wanted to see if it was in fact a rooster and when is started crowing. My BR is being questioned, but at 5 months has this tiny comb and doesn't...
I have a BR at 5 months old and s/he hasn't much of a comb or wattle, and both are pretty pink, not red. Your post makes me feel like mine is a pullet. However I just found out my BO is a rooster, so disappointed :(
Thanks, looks like I'll just have two, I have no extra coop for introductions. Also, do you have any thoughts on the BR? She and the BO will run at eachother with hackles out, but I've never heard the BR crow and it doesn't have much of a wattle or comb at 5 months old. I'm so bummed if I have...
