She sleeps up on the roosts with the others. They have multiple roots made of 2x4’s. No pole style roosts. I am in and out a minimum of twice a day to collect eggs and check on them. I haven’t seen picking on one another other than the typical peck once in a while.
They have plenty of room and things to keep busy. They’re pretty spoiled. They eat organic crumble and pellets plus fresh organic veggies and sometimes fruit. They get scratch and cracked corn and black soldier fly larva. No they are currently not free ranging as they’re not liking the snow...
Can someone please help my poor chicken? I’m not on this site enough to know exactly where to post so I hope this is right. One of my black australorps looks awfully painful but behaves completely normal. She is 10 months old and shares a coop with 10 others all the same age. I live in...
If anyone can please tell me what’s going on with her I’d really appreciate it. A couple weeks ago the feather were all out on one leg. A few more days and all missing on both legs. Another week passed and now her belly is bald and red. I put antibiotic ointment on and there’s been no...
Hello,
I have a two year old Wyandotte who began losing feathers last October. It slowed down a little but beginning this spring she has rapidly lost more. I'm worried she won't make it through the winter here in MN. Is this somewhat normal? Will she ever regrow new feathers? Her behavior...
I have 10 acres for them to roam. Some is densely wooded and there’s a lake. The old girls hang around with the mowed area and edge of the woods. I let them all out together again about 30 minutes ago. So far so good. I’m new to raising chicks from 2 days old and mixing with older birds. I...
Thank you so much! I’m not too familiar with this site yet and am just seeing your message now. I did let the older girls out for quite a while and then the young ones. All went well. The sweetest hen I have told the rooster who’s in charge. That was funny to watch. Nothing that made me...
Thank you for your advise! Finally got around to letting them out together. Just as I suspected, the sweetest older hen let the young ones know who’s boss. She’s an ISA Brown and has been the most docile and friendly but when my Wyandotte stepped out of top hen role the ISA took over. She...
Hello!
I have 3 2 1/2 yr old hens who have always free ranged. I now have 10 3 1/2 month old hens and one rooster. Can anyone please tell me when is the right time to let them free range together? They have separate coops and runs and have been checking each other out through the hardware...
So much to reply to so I will make this short as I’m quite sleepy tonight. The run has a roof like a house, wood and shingled. It came with hardware cloth around the entire run from floor to ceiling. The coop is completely enclosed with vents only, no windows. I also put screen around the...
I am going to adjust the timer to shut off lights earlier. I also have silver bubble insulation on the walls which I installed when it started getting really cold here. I think the reflection from the inside light shining on the insulation is the problem. I do have a heat lamp hanging from...
