I am new to having chickens and I am currently putting up 2 bushels of apples. Would feeding the cores with seeds harm the chickens? I was thinking that I may freeze the cores in smaller batches and pull them out in the winter and give them to them. Does anyone think this is a good idea or not...
Just discovered today, we have moths taking over some of our animal feed. It is a 40lb bag so, we do not want to toss it. Any suggestions? Should we worry or just go ahead and consider them protein and use the feed? We have put all feed into large plastic garbage cans and put lids on them to...
Was wondering if anyone could tell me, a couple of my hens in the past day or so are laying eggs without the hard calcified shell. I was wondering if that could be due to us feeding them too many other foods from the gardens and the kitchen and they are not eating enough of their layer feed and...
Thanks Dewey! You know what, I never thought about them just scratching it about, spreading it and burrying it for that fact. I have just been putting it in a pile on the ground for them to peck at. Wow...I feel like a bone head. Thanks again. I am going to do the milk jug thing for sure.
Do hope your chicks are doing ok. I would have never would have thought about the wire either. We were not going to name ours either but my granddaughter picked out a favorite and named her Sassy and before I knew it, I named one Peeps. The rest are unnamed but trying hard not to get too...
Wow, thanks for the reminder. I do hope your son is feeling better soon. I know snakes are good and serve purpose but I sure don't like em'. They scare me to death.
Hey, I am new at this chick thing too but I read that when there is an age difference or even when ever your introducing new gals to the group that it is best to put the new ones in a small cage and sit in the space so the old gals can check out the new gals and get use to them. That would keep...
Just wanted to say hello to everyone. I have never raised chicks myself but grew up around them on my cousin's farm as a kid. Loved robbing the hen houses when I was a kid before breakfast. I have fond memories of those days.
We have 8 Rhode Island Reds that we purchased from the Tractor's...
Thanks for your response. I have 8 gals and they are about 8 weeks old. I put a several of cups of grit out for them every other day. Being new at this, I wasn't sure if they were just going through it too fast. We don't have much of a grit source for them other than what we are giving them...
Just wondering if someone could tell me how much grit 8 week old gals should be going through in a week? I know the bag says 1lb of grit to 40 lbs of food but my gals seem to be consuming more than they should I think. I have just been putting out a couple of cups or so every few days and it...
Hello,
We are new with rasing chickens but just wanted to tell you, we have shavings on the floor but the first few nights, our girls did the same thing. They seem to do that almost right away when they go in for the evening but every morning, they are all on the perches sitting together. I...
