We've had temps over 100 for so long I can't remember what it was like to get anything different. I've lost a couple. They free range and get under the porch, or wade in their pool. I just figure its culling the weaker ones and will utimately make the flock better.
I have a pit that runs in my yard with about forty birds. She will run off wild turkeys and can distinguish them from our turkeys. Once she killed one hen that pecked her nose but she seems to understand what will happen if she kills unprovoked. She's seen me shoot plenty of varmints. You...
I have a broody hen that sat for about three days in the general coop. Tonight i went to carry her to her New digs and as i clutched her she released an egg and three days worth of poo. I was covered. I bet i aim that thing different next time.
I know it is over 6 weeks, but not sure exactly how old. This one just has such a larger comb than its mates that I'd bet roo. I appreciate the responses. I'll try to post a comparison pic tomorrow.
I got some banded hens at Atwoods and one has started looking like a roo. I think it is from Ideal Hatchery and judging by their catalog I'd say I got some black Minorcas. He looks a lot like the other banded pullets, just a bigger comb and waddles. All have white cheeks like Leghorns, but I...
Had a silkie mom accept 7 standard BR chicks tonight.
Just sat her on top of them at about 9- everything going well. She's a proven raiser, and these chicks already had feathers (from Atwoods). you here people talk, but it doesn't seem hard to get a silkie to go mama.
I've done it a couple of times with my black silkie hen. I haven't ever done it where I let her sit the dummy eggs over a week. So, both times I've done it have been at about seven days, both successful.
One time I got greedy and tried to place a couple of more chicks the second night. She...
Wow, thank you all, I appreciate it. I'm crossing that RIR with my Red Stars, hoping to get some good layers. I was incubating a lot of them, then lost power. It is nice to have people to discuss this stuff with, besides the folks at work, who don't raise chickens and get bored to death. Thanks.
