    Overheating?

We've had temps over 100 for so long I can't remember what it was like to get anything different. I've lost a couple. They free range and get under the porch, or wade in their pool. I just figure its culling the weaker ones and will utimately make the flock better.

    What's your least favorite breed?

Love the look, but won't own Leghorns. Too flighty. Really not fond of any in the Mediterranean class.

Tying a dead chicken around their neck

I have a pit that runs in my yard with about forty birds. She will run off wild turkeys and can distinguish them from our turkeys. Once she killed one hen that pecked her nose but she seems to understand what will happen if she kills unprovoked. She's seen me shoot plenty of varmints. You...

After a couple of years the poo doesn't usually affect me. This one was special. Worth it though.

    I got poo bombed

I have a broody hen that sat for about three days in the general coop. Tonight i went to carry her to her New digs and as i clutched her she released an egg and three days worth of poo. I was covered. I bet i aim that thing different next time.

    Black Minorca Rooster?

I know it is over 6 weeks, but not sure exactly how old. This one just has such a larger comb than its mates that I'd bet roo. I appreciate the responses. I'll try to post a comparison pic tomorrow.

    Black Minorca Rooster?

I got some banded hens at Atwoods and one has started looking like a roo. I think it is from Ideal Hatchery and judging by their catalog I'd say I got some black Minorcas. He looks a lot like the other banded pullets, just a bigger comb and waddles. All have white cheeks like Leghorns, but I...

    silkie foster mom

Had a silkie mom accept 7 standard BR chicks tonight. Just sat her on top of them at about 9- everything going well. She's a proven raiser, and these chicks already had feathers (from Atwoods). you here people talk, but it doesn't seem hard to get a silkie to go mama.

How long does a broody need to set before she will adopt chicks??

I've done it a couple of times with my black silkie hen. I haven't ever done it where I let her sit the dummy eggs over a week. So, both times I've done it have been at about seven days, both successful. One time I got greedy and tried to place a couple of more chicks the second night. She...

I am MEAN! What am I? A Mutt Bantam?

Wow, thank you all, I appreciate it. I'm crossing that RIR with my Red Stars, hoping to get some good layers. I was incubating a lot of them, then lost power. It is nice to have people to discuss this stuff with, besides the folks at work, who don't raise chickens and get bored to death. Thanks.

love my silkie hen- what a mama

Thanks, I forgot about the Austrolorps, but I've heard they were good too. And, Ive been wanting some EE'ers. I'm planning on a big order this spring, and I think I'll get those, some orpingtons, and probably some more Red Star hens. Man, I love those Red Stars for laying- they are not too...

I am MEAN! What am I? A Mutt Bantam?

This guy is gamey and I have had to get after him more than a couple times. He carries his wings pointed down. Also interested in breed of hen pictured beside him. She is teenincy and fast. This is a bad, incomplete pic, but somebody may know... Here's my big roo, I assume his is a...

love my silkie hen- what a mama

She did so well that I went and got a few more, she now has seven babies. Out of the second batch I presented to her, she only accepted the chicks that looked like the chicks from the first batch. Tried to peck the oddballs, so I guess I'm gonna raise those. Atwoods had bantam straight runs...

love my silkie hen- what a mama

So, a few weeks ago I bought a couple of older silkies (salt & pepper) at the swap meet, planning on using them to raise chicks. Neither seemed to be as broody or inclined to set the way I remembered them to do when I was a kid. Well, a couple of days ago Pepper went broody on one egg...

First Hawk Attack Stupid sharp shin hawks

Same problem in Altus... I've noticed more raptors recently, a ssh got after a banty hen of mine the other day- she made it, though. Also noticed what looked like one or two coopers hawks the other day. The worst here is the Great Horned Owls. Last year, I had some Guineas go wild, and refuse...
