Been a few days since I have had time to do anything to the coop. I started college this week, (weird being a 32 year old just starting college) so the week was pretty much eaten up by studies,... Today I went outside, and mixed some paint together I have had sitting around for a while,.. I had...
Great for my pocketbook. I was lost my job back in may when they closed our plant, so it has been hard to find funding for such projects. I decided to quit being lazy, and just went and snapped a couple pics... heres the update so far: (oh, and I am not a roofer, so its not perfect)

I got the roof on today, and did some more dormer work to it. I will try to get a new pic sometime tomorrow... (Too tired to go back out there). I am getting real close to being able to paint it,.. then trim it, and finally move the hens in!

Inside dimensions on the main coop are 8' wide, and 6' deep. The porch is another 3', so it sits on a pad that is 9'x8'. It is tall enough for me to stand up in. The peak of the roof is about 8.5' up. I am going to build a "loft" so to speak for the roost, with the nestboxes under it.

Put an ad on craigslist in the wanted section for free scrap lumber. I had a guy call me that works at a sign company. They had a ton of crates out back he said I could have. They were made with 1x4's, 2x4's, and plywood. I had to tear them apart to move them, but it was well worth the...
Heres the old one... It was built in a day, just to house the birds... Not good enough for winter..:
And the new one. So far, I have less than $100.00 in materials. I found a deal on craigslist on some scrap lumber:
It is based from a kit home depot sells,... but I did not have $2500.00 to...
well, the last egg pipped, and did no more. We did some investigating, and found it was dead in the shell... have no idea what happened. So, the final count is 8 out of 9 eggs. Not bad considering it was my first try!

Here is a link to my 12 volt incubator. In an outtage, all I have to do is take it out to the car and plug it in.. If a person wanted to, they could use a battery tender type charger, and run the incubator off of a battery all the time, and the tender would recharge the battery as it uses it...
Ok, a little update!
8 In the brooder! All looking healthy now. the last two that hatched gave me a scare..:
And here is the most exciting news! #9 pipped. If it makes it out ok, I have 9 for 9, at a 100% hatch rate!
This is my first hatch ever, in a DIY incubator running a dismantled...
One more! This one looks a little weaker than the rest did though. I still have 1 more egg pipped, and one not pipped. The waiting game stinks! lol..

Still same situation. 6 out, 2 pipped (still trying though) and one has not pipped yet. trying to be as patient as possible! Man, the urge to help is overwhelming, but I can't give into temptation. The two I am waiting on now pipped about 3:00 or so this afternoon, so I will give them 24hrs and...
Most of my pips today were in the middle. So far, I have 6 out of 9 out, and two more pipped. The ones that pipped near the middle of the shell did however take longer to hatch.. Don't know if thats relevant though.
