    Spoke to a vet over the phone as she is located 1.5 hours away and she said it was most likely the stomach of the chicken? Tried to poke it back in and not even close...gave her another bath / soak today and put more prepH and antibiotic ointment on...just cant tell if she is in pain or not?

    Thank you all...I have no idea if that is the vent or not...I keep thinking it is possibly the lining / I guess large intestine? None of the pics online look like her bottom...it is so purple / black? No idea how long she has been this way either but I would guess 2 days although I do not see...

    If you have the planter located where the plants will not freeze you have several options the chicks will love...Mint, Lavender, Rosemary, Oregano, etc. Check out the Fresh Eggs Daily blog as she is a strong proponent for herb utilization.

    Baby chicks: medicated feed after being vaccinated

    X2. You can us the medicated food no problem, just beware that you are essentially no longer lowering the risk of cocci. Of course clean, dry brooder and you probably won't have anything to worry about.

    X2 There are also some drawbacks to providing a light at night and not letting the chickens go through a natural yearly cycle of molting and reduction in egg production.
