Thanks, that makes me feel better!
This morning we worked on the austrolorp's feet and were able to easily remove the scab on one foot and my husband dug around but didn't see much in the way of pus or a corn, it actually looked like it was in the process of healing, so we put a bunch of...
Thanks so much for your reply. So do you feel like you need to remove the scab and pus even if it is a small scab without swelling?
Do you know how quickly this infection goes from minor to fatal?
You don't mention soaking or antibiotics, but a lot of other people do.
Thanks!
Thanks so much for your reply. For the other foot that isn't swollen and my other hen that has a scab but no swelling, would you just keep it clean and bandaged or would you cut it out on those too?
I took a look and you are right, we don't have a lot of bedding right under the roosts, so I...
Yesterday my daughter noticed our austrolorp has a swollen foot. Much reading later and I now know more than I ever thought I'd need to know about Bumblefoot (She has the black scabs on both feet). We are not planning to take her to the vet ($100 to walk in the door and they said it would be...
Hi,
We got our first chicks in end of March and kept them in their brooder until they were 6 or 8 weeks old and by that time it was warm enough for them to be in the coop. We recently lost 3 chickens and were thinking of getting chicks. We will be traveling a bit in August so we would order them...
We have a mixed flock and I love it that way. It is easier to tell your girls apart, you get to try out a variety of breeds and I think it looks great. The downside of having your chickens be more individual is when you lose one you know exactly which one it was. We had two Black Australorps and...
It's been not especially hot and they've been mostly in the run for a while. Freeranging was only when we were home and outside so I dont think that's it. Thanks for the reply.
we had ten girls that were 18 months old. We had managed to avoid losing any even with some free ranging. Two weeks ago a coyote (we think, maybe a juvenile or a fox- my neighbor saw it, we didn't) got one bird. The rest have been in the run since. Wednesday I found a hen dead in the run. No...
Thanks for your response. If it is 10 degrees out or so the eggs get very cold very quickly. I thought that it was ok to keep fresh eggs out but you couldn't start leaving them on the counter after they had been refrigerated, which basically they have been brought to that temp.
We have a mixed flock of 10 hens that were born last spring. My husband made a skelter that we had displayed on our table and it was great because you always knew which egg to use first. We live in New England and it is full on winter here so since the eggs are sometimes super cold when we get...
