Very sick (dying?) Pekin with peritonitis & pneumonia -- crop full/stuck?

My 2-year-old Pekin duck Cotton developed peritonitis, apparently from internal laying, while I was busy caring for a family medical emergency for a week. Then she stopped walking so I took her to the vet yesterday where they told me she also had a lung infection. She was also pretty underweight...

    Ducks Cant decide.

Female ducks are not quiet! Especially when they start their alarm quack. : )

Is an all female flock ok?

My small flock is all girls and they do indeed "mate" with each other as soon as I fill up their swimming pool.

    They ate a mouse!

My ducks have ripped toads apart. Especially when one catches a toad and the others want a piece. I do my best to keep the toads away.

Silver Appleyard Ducks Can Fly? How High , Far, Long ?

My 2 SAs can hop-fly about 6-8 feet at a time, never higher than about 3 feet though. They are BIG ducks.

    Duck housing ideas needed!

The Eglu Cube is expensive (and have gotten a lot worse since I bought mine a couple of years ago, just looked at the prices--yikes) but mine has worked great for my 5 (as of today just four, alas) ducks. It is very well made, sturdy, and pretty easy to clean -- I think it will last a very long...

    Killed by hawk

😭😢😭 One of my little flock of 5 (Brownie, a Khaki Campbell) was killed by a hawk today right next to my house and right outside their pen. A HUGE new hawk in the neighborhood who arrived a few days ago. I am heartbroken and so sad I did not watch them more closely. I did get to her before she...

Probably peritonitis in a khaki campbell : (

I'm pretty bummed out -- one of my 2 Khaki Campbells probably has peritonitis (vet visit today) -- she has been laying soft shelled eggs for months, with calcium supplements not helping more than a day or two. In the past few days has seemed visibly uncomfortable like she couldn't get her wings...

    Duck laying soft shelled eggs

Are you using the 23% calcium gluconate? I'm having the same problem with my Khaki Campbells.

Baby Appleyard smaller than others, peeping constantly, won't really eat, vent might be distended?

Too late, the little Appleyard just died. 😥 I just went to check and she was lying on her side not looking good at all. I picked her up and used a wet q-tip and then a moistened cotton ball to try to remove the stuff blocking her vent but I think all I did was hurt her : (. She died a few...

    Hello from Madison WI

Thank you! I already have a post in the duck forum -- one of the Appleyards is not doing well : (. Won't eat, the others are already almost twice as big and I only brought them home yesterday. I just did manage to get a tiny bit of very watered down smushed up duck food & electrolytes in her --...

Baby Appleyard smaller than others, peeping constantly, won't really eat, vent might be distended?

Oh also the affected duckling keeps reaching under to rub/groom her lower abdomen. It really does seem like she's trying to rub or change something there.

    Hello from Madison WI

Hi all, I grew up with ducks, chickens, geese, sheep, goats...everything on my parents' hobby farm in rural WI. We ate duck eggs & cooked with them when I was a kid and I still remember how great they were especially for baking. Decades later I am back in WI and just got my first backyard...

Baby Appleyard smaller than others, peeping constantly, won't really eat, vent might be distended?

I should add that they are all getting chick/duckling electrolytes in their water and they are eating unmedicated chick feed. I chopped up some dandelions, clover & kale for their swim water and they seemed to love it.

Baby Appleyard smaller than others, peeping constantly, won't really eat, vent might be distended?

Hi -- I just brought home 3 1-day-old Appleyards and 3 runners. They're about 3 days old now. One baby Appleyard won't stop peeping, doesn't really eat, and is already only 2/3 the size of the others. She'll peck at greens when I let them swim a little, and looked like she was eating food we put...
