Is the vent fully prolapsed, or partially? Is she able to pass any feces? Has she laid an egg since you've been watching? If she cannot pass feces or an egg, all will impact and become septic and she will die a horribly painful death. Much better to put her down than to watch that happen to your...
Thank you! Legbands are not required. DD got her birdie all set for the night, and is looking forward to living in the livestock barns all day tomorrow.
It was fun to see the poultry that was already checked in. AND, my girl is absolutely giggly about the huge Australorpe roo that backs up to...
This is my DD's first year doing poultry for 4H (egg layer). She decided to enter the FWSSR for the experience, although she knows she won't win anything with a hatchery stock bird. Does anyone have any advice?
She is bringing a 10 month old Barred Rock that is currently laying. Should we...
She is totally adorable. I must say, though, that she reminds me of a little baby in a fuzzy coat and stocking hat that are too big.
So sad about her parents, but she looks cute enough to keep ya smilin a LOOONNNGGG time! Enjoy!
Glad you are getting a game cam. Remember, coons can open latches too. Good to confirm before "chatting" with neighbors...
Hope you get to the bottom of it all!
1 gold star
1 black sexlink
2 americanas
1 barred rock
1 delaware
And....since you didn't specify chickens, and I'm a smart aleck ....
2 German shepherds
2 american shorthairs (kittens)
1 tuxedo (cat)
In answer to your question about neosporin with pain killers, any medication with "cain" in it is toxic to chickens. ie. lidocain, benzocain, etc... Don't know why in particular on a cellular level, I just know that it will kill them.
Good luck with your poor little birdie.
I pay $10-$25 a day. The guy who actually stays at our house, gives meds, feeds, walks, and plays with the animals gets $20-25/day. He really works with the animals, checks them over carefully every day, etc - AND he vacuums and washes dishes. The kid next door that just collects eggs, feeds...
I take out treats mixed with chipped ice. I know someone who sticks a layer of ice under a layer of sand for the birdies to sit on....
Bein' in Texas, the ladies are (mostly) used to the heat - it was this past winter's unusual cold that was really hard on them.
Ditto on the heat question. My hens will NOT go into the coop in summer time unless I slide the front doors off to convert to a 3 sided (and much cooler) setup. 'Course, I'm in Texas, and we've got 102 in the shade here today. With the doors on, the coop becomes quite the hot box, in spite of...
First, I must say that I very much like your coop! Very pretty!
Idea #1: Picket fence around garden, then lower the coop down to ground level like a tractor. Ideally, it would be shorter than the fence. Paint it to blend in.
#2: Train roses/grape vines, etc up the wire part and make it...
My grandfather raised leghorns for eggs - which he sold by the gross to the stores in nearby towns. He had about 1000 birds at a time. They were not in cages, but they were not free range either. His flock was the healthiest in his county.
At the same time, grandpa NEVER petted a chicken. Never...
Things my daughter has learned are bad in the chicken coop:
painted nails
earrings
rings - ok, any shiny jewelry
rivets, including the rivets in regular denim jeans
zippers
shoe strings
bug bites or scabs of any kind
lip gloss
barrettes or shiny hair clips
Stupid lil buggers eat EVERYTHING!!!
You're doing great with no tools! Heck, mine's not much better and I had a ton of power tools LOL.
Two questions:
#1 Do you have German Shepherds? I saw your alias and wondered... I have a male and a female.
#2 Is that green plastic "wire"? If it is, it will not keep a GSD or other large...
I buy all my chickies at Russell Feed and Supply. (I'm in Texas) Never had to sign a book with number of birds, but don't get to get my own out of the brooder. That being said, they have the 5 foot tall stack of brooders and I can specify which chicks I want, just can't grab 'em myself. They...
