It looks a murder scene in the coop!

I think you are right. The one that I think is bleeding won't be still enough for me to inspect closely but I did see a fresh drop of blood on its beak. She's the one that wil get out when I leave the pen open and I have to bait and catch her. So now she's a little too smart to catch. Lol

Help! Hole above vent on hatchling?

It's not as visible now that he's fluffing out. Also I no longer see the oily substance. It appears that this is a very active tail. (Not sure what to call it). It worried me bc I didn't notice this on the other chicks. All appears to be normal.

Also the blood is a shade of light red and very watery.

It looks a murder scene in the coop!

Ok. So I go out this morning to feed my chickens, and b/c of the rain last night I had to take the top part of the feeder off. Well, when I went to put it back on I noticed blood on it. Once I really started looking the whole thing was splattered in blood. It was still moist indicating that...

Pipped egg with dry membrane. Should I leave it alone for now?

Wow! Congratulations. My first batch was only 4 eggs and the 4 one just hatched. 4 out of 4! So far.... I'm worried about the last one. It appears that something strange is going on above his vent hole.

Help! Hole above vent on hatchling?

It is day 24 and my last chick just hatched. It appears to have an opening above his vent. At first I thought it was something like a short stubby tail like thing b/c it was moving up and down. As I'm writing this I'm realizing that this may be the exact location where the oil gland is on...

Homemade incubator, not working :( Please help

I just did my very first hatch with a homemade incubator for chickens, and I have a 2nd homemade incubator with more eggs to come soon. Through the course of this I've had 2 rotten eggs and 4 infertile eggs. The infertile eggs looked like I was just keeping them warm when I examined them. Are...

    Successful First Hatch!

Well, so far 3 out of 4 chicks in my first batch have hatched. The 4th has been pipped for the last 18 hours and is just hanging out for now. It's funny how relaxed I am now compared to how I was for the first egg hatching, but I'm getting ready in about a week for our second batch to hatch...

Pipped egg with dry membrane. Should I leave it alone for now?

He has been active, but has not made any further progress. It's been 24 hours since he pipped. Whether I should have or not I don't know, but I decided to help him out. I removed the shell chip by chip around the egg. There was one speck of blood, so I put him in a moist paper towel and back...

    Hey guys

Thanks so much. This is pretty stressful, but i'm sure it'll be worth it. The kids are having a blast with all of this as well, so that adds a lot more fun to it.

Ask your chick related questions HERE! (Newbies welcome!)

I'm having my first hatch. 2 eggs have pipped. The first one is at the 18 hour mark. His membrane is white white white! The humidity is at 70%. I can moisten it w/o opening the incubator, so I was moistening it but it dries back out in a few minutes. Should I keep moistening it? Not sure...

Pipped egg with dry membrane. Should I leave it alone for now?

Hey guys, I'm a newbie and any advice is much appreciated right now. My first egg pipped yesterday which was exactly on time to the hour. It has now been about 18 hours and its membrane is white. I know this means it's dry, but my humidity is at 70%. I'm using a styrofoam cooler which is...
