I just hatched out some Svart Hona's and they were really different than my other chicks. There was NO peeping or wiggling of the eggs. And I had to help two of them out of the shell which with other birds was a death sentence but not with these. Both chicks would have died had I not helped...
I'm late to this conversation but I bought a 12 egg Kebonnixs incubator in June. I have done two hatches with it and found it easy to use and really reliable. I got the eggs on ebay through the mail so some were never developed for one reason or another but the ones that developed embryos all...
I just hatched three Svart Honas. Two of the chicks are totally crazy. They run around with so much energy they bash into things. The third one seems developmentally disabled. Very slow and gets knocked over all the time. Is this normal? My only experience with chicks is with silkies and they...
Greetings Yoshi,
Greetings Yoshi,
I am also a long time lurker here. Such a great wealth of information and experience here - with a little mumbo jumbo mixed in. HA. Your experience with aviculture and hydroculture and composting and everything sounds super interesting.
Glad I'm not the only...
Sorry, I have not heard of 'dry incubating' so won't comment on that until I have a clue but I find the peeping usually happens the same time as the egg wiggling and shortly after there is a pip. If it wiggles - talk to it, chirp at it, play some harmonica, whatever you do to introduce yourself...
It looks totally alive and growing but only around day 17-18. I'd lock it down, raise the humidity and stop candling it today though. And shoot - if it's moving it's alive! Good luck.
Do some of them stand more erect - more vertical? Could you post pictures of them standing up? My hatch last year of six silkies had 5 roos and 1 hen. All the roos stood more erect and aside from a difference in size due to who came out of the shell first all the roos were bigger than the one...
Holy mackenoly, those are expensive. I'm with everyone else. Only give as much scratch/treats as they can eat out of your hand when your there but no more. Scratch especially corn is only slightly better than Doritos. Try both crumble and pellets and make them available in multiple locations...
I had the exact same problem. I tried poison pellets and a variety of traps and finally caught two rats with the Victor 'Power Kill Rat Trap'. They were about $4 each and the only one that did anything at all. It was easy to set. I used a smear of peanut butter being careful not to touch it too...
I got my 6 chicks when they were 2-3 days old. My 115 pound Borzoi dog was obsessed with them. I rarely saw such an intense look in his eyes. I kept them apart but in their second week I accidentally left his gate open. When I got home there was one less chick and only the smallest drop of blood...
Hi, I'm a newbie too. Nice to meet you. Did you get adults or chicks? The chicks I raised from babies are so much more connected to me than the adolescent ones. I'm only going to get my birds as chicks from now on cause it was such a beautiful experience watching them grow up. As you have...
Hello,
My name is Blue. I live in Asheville NC. I am a total chicken newbie but am loving it and plan to have a flock the rest of my life. I currently have 6 pullets, 3 lavender orpingtons, 2 light brahmas and 1 silkie, AND 3 silkie cockerels. All less than 4 months old. My flock started when a...
Have you ruled out mites or lice? Sorry if that sends chills up your spine like it does mine. If that's the case I'm told poultry dust will get rid of them.
I vote pullet. I have silkies that are three weeks old and I have no experience with this but if I compare your girl to my six she looks like the ones of mine I think are girls. Three of mine look really rooish with well developed legs and feet. They also are doing something that looks like...
